Highlights from our learning in P7
‘Letters from the Lighthouse’
This week Primary Seven were introduced to their new class novel, Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll. We enjoyed working with our Talk Partners to predict and think up questions about the novel by making observations from the front cover.
We also used the first paragraph of the story to inspire a creative writing task and wrote the next two paragraphs in the same style as the author. The children had to consider using descriptive language for the setting and try to build the suspense to engage the reader.
Outdoor Learning
The snowy weather has caused great excitement in the classroom this week! Trying to use every experience as a learning one, we headed outside to work on learning our weekly spelling patterns. Can you identify any of the words?
Rounded off with a wee snowball throwing competition 🙂
Another successful week in Primary 4, despite the difficult weather conditions.
Well done to Jana for being our Raffle Prize Winner.
Keep working hard on learning your words for the Burns Celebration Event on Thursday 8th February (6-7:30pm). The song words can be found on the blog entry from P.5/4.
Have a lovely and safe weekend – looking forward to seeing you all on Monday!
Mrs Glancy
Below are the lyrics that the children of P 4 and P 5 have been practicing for, for their show. Please can you encourage your child to practice these at home.
My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose
O my Love is like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June:
O my Luve is like the melodie,
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in love am I;
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.
Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
And I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.
And fare-thee-weel, my only Love!
And fare-thee-weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Love,
Tho’ ’twere ten thousand mile!
Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!
Chorus
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.
Chorus
Many Thanks.
Mrs. Craig, Mrs. Glancy, Miss Hanlon & Mrs. Stewart.
It’s been a spectacular week in P3.
In maths and numeracy we have continued with estimation and rounding to the nearest 10s and 100s. We are becoming more confident with this.
We started our reading groups again and have new books to read at home. We are going to focus on using expression when we are reading.
For writing, because of the weather this week we chose to write fictional (imaginative) stories about snow adventures. We tried to use lots of interesting vocabulary and practised VCOP.
Our new topic is Ancient Egypt. We learned about the Egyptian alphabet called hieroglyphs and challenged ourselves to write our names like this.
We have been doing work in health and wellbeing and PE with Mrs McGlynn. We practised skills for dodgeball in PE.
We hope you have a fantastic weekend. Remember to keep safe in the snow!

Have a super snowy weekend.
We have been loving the snow this week and have made sure to go out and have fun.
The children showed great team work in building Bob our snowman and we had some problem solving to do as well.
We found that Mrs. Sneddon (with the help of some children) were strong enough to lift Bob’s torso onto his bottom half. Who knew compacted snow can be so heavy.
Due to the snowy weather on Tuesday we had to postpone our visit to Sky Academy. We will let you know as soon as possible when Sky can accommodate us .
Mrs Sneddon and the ladies in the nursery are supper proud of the wonderful reading P6 did with the nursery boys and girls for the Big Bedtime Read.
The children shall be practicing this song during collaboration next week. Please can you encourage your child to practice this at home.
The Eco Song
(To the tune of Wonderwall by Oasis)
Today is going to be the day that we are gonna switch off the lights
By now you should have somehow put the rubbish in the bin
I don’t believe in anybody who isn’t an eco pal, an eco pal
Back beat, the word is on the street that the eco gang is back
Our aim is to clean up the school and switch off all the lights
I don’t believe in anybody who isn’t an eco pal, an eco pal
And all the work we have to do is tricky
Watching lights and cleaning up aint pretty
There are many things we need to earn our eco flag
And we’re gonna try
Cause maybe, Murrayfield is gonna go crazy
Cause we’re a team, help the eco gang!
Miss Hanlon
Welcome back, I hope you all have had a lovely break.
Just a little reminder of some of our upcoming dates:
-Tomorrow the children can come to the school dressed in their pyjamas.
-Friday the 26th of January is our Assembly.
-Thursday the 8th of February from 6 pm until 7.30 pm will be our Burns Show.
I just want to let parents also know that there will be no reading books being sent home over the next few weeks, but I may send home some additional reading as homework to do based on our current topic, which is Burns. This week I have asked the children to concentrate on practicing their words for the show and for their assembly.
Below are the words for some of the songs which the children have been learning so far in class. Please can you encourage your child to practice these words.
Ye banks and braes o’ bonnie Doon
How ye can bloom so fresh and fair
How can ye chant ye little birds
And I sae weary fu’ o’ care
Ye’ll break my heart ye warbling birds
That wantons thro’ the flowering thorn
Ye mind me o’ departed joys
Departed never to return
Oft hae I rov’d by bonnie Doon
To see the rose and woodbine twine
And ilka bird sang o’ its love
And fondly sae did I o’ mine
Wi’ lightsome heart I pu’d a rose
Fu’ sweet upon its thorny tree
But my false lover stole my rose
But ah! She left the thorn wi’ me
As always, if you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to come and speak to me 🙂
Many Thanks.
Miss Hanlon.
