P7 pupils visited the museum to take part in a workshop on Natural Disasters. They learn about the formation of volcanoes and the destruction they can cause to people, the landscape and the environment. The pupils also enjoyed exploring the Science, Space and Animal Exhibits.
The House and Vice Captains met for the first time last week to discuss their roles and responsibilities within school for the year ahead. The group have many exciting ideas to embed with our pupils and they are looking forward to being excellent role models for the pupils they will work with.
Thank you to all the parents, carers and children in supporting the parent council to raise funds to buy new Murrayfield Primary school sports kits. Primary Seven pupils proudly modelled the new kits at assembly today. The pupils are looking foward to wearing them at sporting events.
Welcome to our first blog entry from the new Primary Seven pupils. The first three weeks at school have been very busy. We have already applied for P7 Job responsibilities, carried our our House Captains presentations at assembly and have booked an outing for Monday 11th September to The National Museum of Scotland. We are looking forward to going to learn about Natural Disasters.
We have been learning about hurricanes and how they are formed. This week we have watched the destruction caused by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean.
We have been using sets of compasses to measure and draw circles. We have increased our knowledge of mathematical vocabulary – circumference, radius and diameter. Many of the pupils enjoyed the technical challenge of creating their own circle patterns after looking at crop circles for inspiration.
We are excited about taking part in Scottish Maths week beginning 8th September and intend to take part in the Sumdog competition to increase our speed and recall of maths and numeracy skills.
Each day week we start class in a different way, with Mindfulness Monday, Think about it Tuesday, Wordy Wednesday and Technology Thursday. We have discussed the idea of anytime anywhere learning and are planning to use our own devices to enhance our attainment. Over the term we will be informing parents and carers more about using devices in the classroom.
This week Mrs McGlynn we all enjoyed taking part in Drama, where we had to act out instructions from random cards.
Our class charter has been created on the theme of fidget spinners. The articles which impact us in the school have been covered through using an interesting website called launchpad.unicef.org.uk.
At assembly today the house and vice captains were announced. Well done to all the children who went forward for the positions. The House/Vice Captains for 2017 – 2018 are:
All P7 pupils should remember to wear school uniform, bring a packed lunch and a waterproof jacket for our outing on Monday 11th September.
The class are beginning to count down to the end of term, however we are continuing to work hard.
In Maths, the class have been learning angles. We enjoyed hunting for them inside the school and going outdoors into the playground area. We were surprised by the amount of the amount of acute and obtuse angles we could find on the Trim Trail and on the trees in the Butterfly garden.
On Thursday we had a Zumba instructor into help us improve our fitness and dance. We enjoyed trying out the dance moves and working together to do the limbo!
In writing , we looked at how to effectively peer assess our writing against the success criteria. We worked in pairs to examine the quality of our writing and discussed it against the Scottish Criterion. Many of children were very reflective and willing to take on the feedback given. I’m looking forward to reading the next piece of writing they produce during Big Write.
Fantastic Flying Forces Workshop presented by the education team from The National Museum of Flight
Today we had a visit from the education team from The National Museum of Flight, in East Lothian. We learnt about the forces, which have an impact on flight and used new vocabulary – gravity, aerodynamics, streamlining, drag and thrust. The class had fun taking part in different experiments.
Afterwards the pupils decided they would love their parents or carers to take them to visit Concorde and the other aircraft at The Museum of Flight.
Over the last few few weeks the pupils have been taking part in workshops about Music, Sound and Technology with a teacher called Miss Aslan. She has introduced us to Makey Makey’s, microphones and Zoom recorders. We have been challenged to explore and create sounds and music for a short animation. We have been having lots of fun using every day objects and our voices to create sounds. We have also become ‘experts ‘ in setting up and recording equipment. Sadly next week is our last input from Miss Aslan, however we can’t wait to watch and listen to our completed animation. We hope to be able to share our our efforts with parents and carers soon.
In Maths we have continued to focus on handling data and learning to use the vocabulary of probability. We used the smart board to play a fun game called ‘Take A Chance’, before explaining reasons for our choices. In mental maths we have continued to look at developing our multiplication strategies. On Wednesday, Mrs Waugh, Ms Macrae and Mrs Sneddon came into watch our Number Talks lesson. They enjoyed supporting us to share strategies used to find solutions to the questions.
In class, we have taken time to discuss the events which occurred earlier in the week in Manchester. We held a minutes silence to remember and support people who have died or have been injured. We had a great discussion on the event, sharing our feelings and worries about the world we live in.
In Gym this week we took advantage of the amazing sunshine to improve and develop skills in track and field events, such as relay racing, hammer throw, shot putt and hurdles. We are all looking forward to sports days on Friday 2nd June.
Have a great weekend. Hope the sun keeps shining! Remember to stay safe by wearing sun cream and a hat 🙂
Thank you to everyone who helped P6/5 raise money for Red Nose Day. We are delighted to announce we raised £248! I’m sure you’ll agree it is a great amount.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Design a Nose competition. We selected two winning entries, which were designed by Lily Moore in P1 and AmyLeigh Maculay in P7.
This week Primary 6/5 have been working hard to encourage the pupils and staff in the school to raise money for Red Nose Day. Red Nose Day is part of the Comic Charity, which helps tackle poverty and social injustice in the UK and in Africa. P6/5 worked together to organise competitions, film stars for a school Joke-a-thon and rehearse for their class assembly.
Well done to Dean Burt for winning the Find the Nose competition and to everyone who made us laugh telling a joke. The winners of the Design A Nose competition will be announced next week. The class also held a wear red day for their assembly.
During the assembly, P6/5 shared information about the reasons for helping to support Red Nose Day and sang a great rendition of the official song, Put a nose on it! Thank you to everyone for their donations. Once the money is counted we will upload the total amount raised. Every penny helps to change lives for the better!
