Mr Povey Retires!

Today in school, we were very privileged to have our wonderful Mr Povey visit us for the first time in a long while.

Mr Povey has decided to retire and our Mid Calder Primary community wanted to mark this special occasion:  each class designed and made a retirement card filled with messages of thanks and congratulations.  We were able to hold a very small scaled, socially distanced event in school to present him with our special wishes.

We shared some of our special memories with him, including lots of assemblies, performances, nativities and memorable church occasions from over the years.

A huge congratulations from all of your Mid Calder Primary School family Mr Povey – we wish you a long and very happy (and relaxing!) retirement.  We will never think about celebrating the school end of summer term in the same way again!! #schoolsoutforsummer

Useful Websites

Good afternoon everyone.

Here is a list of some websites which you may find helpful over the coming weeks.  Some are particularly for accessing games and learning in Maths or Literacy, whilst some have downloadable resources for home activities.  Although we don’t endorse one particular brand or company, we thought they could be helpful to play games independently, or apply maths/literacy skills across different aspects of learning.

Good morning everyone in our school community.
David Walliams, author of some loved and much enjoyed children’s stories, is reading a story online every day at 11 a.m. This is a great way to share some story time with family members whilst you are practicing excellent listening skills!

Mummified apples in P3!

P3 were curious to find out what had happened to their mummified apples. Were they the same? Did they look any different? Did they smell any different? P3 have been learning about all things Egyptian and had previously learned about the the mummification process and how something called ‘natron’, helped preserve the body for afterlife.

Using a mixture of salt and baking powder, our version of natron, the children covered a quarter of apple and left another quarter uncovered. We made our predictions, thought about the process and what might happen to each apple. Max and Miah predicted that the apple covered with salt and baking powder would be preserved, Scarlett and Charlotte W predicted that the ‘Nitron’ would dry the apple and make it soggy, and Kristen and Alyssa predicted that the apple in ‘Nitron’ would fizz up and turn brown. We left the apple in a cupboard for 7 days. After 7 days we had a wee look to see what the results were. Some of our predictions were correct. The apple covered in ‘Nitron’ dried out and was a bit sponge like in nature, it had preserved!

P3 are now looking forward to their trip to The National Museum, our Egyptian workshop and looking at Egyptian artefacts first hand.

Mardi Gras Carnival and Celebrations for Scotland Loves Languages Week!

Pupils in P6/7 and P7 have participated in a week long programme of learning opportunities, incorporating many different skills for life and learning, across curriculum areas. We have been focusing on applying our spoken French language skills, whilst learning about French culture and celebrations. We have created elaborately designed masks for Mardi Gras; we have used and learned French vocabulary for describing our school, resulting in a fantastic “Voici Mon Ecole” video; we have learned how to participate in a Mardi Gras carnival procession, including our drumming and dancing skills; and finally have been learning how to cook crepes!
Lots of very exciting IDL learning, shared also with Mrs Green from the 1+2 Modern Languages development team, who brought her conversational French skills into our classes! We loved speaking French with her!
