Money in Primary 3

We are learning to find different ways to pay an exact amount

Success Criteria:

– I can exchange coins and notes for different ones which have the same value
– I have explored how a total can be made in different ways
– I can use the coins and notes I have to pay the exact amount for an item in a variety of ways including using the fewest coins

Linked to their IDL context, Mid Calder, Primary 3’s learning in maths has been focused on money. This week, we have been exploring how we can use different combinations of coins to pay for the same items. We have been using our addition skills to calculate the total of a set of coins, then working out lots of different ways to make the same total. We have been using concrete materials like coins to support us, looking at pictorial representations of different amounts, as well as exploring abstract addition and subtraction money calculations through our number discussion. We have also been taking part in a Money Challenge on Sumdog.

P6 – Creating Questionnaires

In Primary 6 we have been learning about and creating our own questionnaires.

Learning intention:

We are learning to write a questionnaire.

Success Criteria:

I can include:

  • a relevant title
  • numbered questions
  • simple language to ensure the reader understands
  • an appropriate structure

We have been learning about questionnaires because we wanted to survey the local community as part of our IDL context, Mid Calder Memories. We wanted to find out whether the businesses in Mid Calder serve the needs of the community. As part of our topic, we will be creating our own business for Mid Calder so getting the views of the community was very important. We decided that a good way to survey our local community was to use a website called Survey Monkey so that all of our friends and relatives could log on and answer our questions. Here are some pictures of our questionnaires. What do you think?

Please help us gather as many opinions as possible by completing our questionnaires. The links and QR codes are in homework jotters. Thank you!

Mystery at Calder House

We are learning to create an interesting setting for our story.
I can use features specific to an imaginative story:
– exciting vocabulary in my story to engage the reader.
– adjectives to describe the setting.
– Calder House as a setting for my story.

– I can use paragraphs to organise my writing.
– I can use past tense.

As part of their IDL context for learning P7 are exploring Mid Calder. They were set the challenge to write a mystery story set in Calder House. First of all they researched Calder House and completed their plan. We then discussed different types of adjectives and vocabulary we would use to describe the house. Next they looked at an example on the board and assessed it using the Success Criteria. After that they wrote their mystery stories and self assessed them.

The Eagles soared through camp

The Eagles had a fantastic time at Loch Insh and, throughout all of the activities that we took part in, every member of the group showed a ‘have a go’ attitude and dared to try things that they’d never tried before. Everyone demonstrated our school values throughout the trip, particularly being enthusiastic, successful and inclusive by cheering each other on, being supportive when people were feeling a little unsure and by having lots of fun and smiling.

P7 Learning Letter Term 2

Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome to term 2 in Primary 7. The children have settled well into the routine of the new term and it is unfortunate that Mrs Wright has not returned but I have put measures in place to ensure consistency and progression in their learning. Mrs Redmond has been the main teacher and is planning very closely with Ms Richmond who has our other P7 children. Mrs Wright does hope to return within the next few weeks and is extremely upset at what has happened. I do understand that does not help our children but by having experienced teachers in the class who are communicating very closely we aim to provide a stimulating and settled environment until her return. I will keep you updated and I am sure the children will continue to relay to you any information on the day to day running of the class.

Cunnigar Candyland Party

Last term Cunnigar won the house cup, so after a vote they decided they wanted to have a Candyland Party. Owen and Ryan worked hard to plan a fantastic party which included chocolate corners, pass the parcel, selfies, wrap the captains and lots and lots of Candy! A big well done to the boys and the P7 helpers for organising our party.
