P6 were making a collage bird artwork. You could use different colours but if you put them all in the same place it will turn a muddy brown. When you make it, first you paint the background and then you draw a picture on a separate piece of paper and stick it on the the piece on paper that you painted the background on. The background can be any colour you like but you would want the bird to stand out. We looked at a picture by Mark Hearld. This is his picture. As you can see he used loads of different colours and there are many layers. You can also see he used stencils to make patters. That picture at the bottom is Mark Hearld. P5a Basketball Masterclass
Yesterday P5a were privileged to have 2 basketball stars in our midst…..Finlay Ferguson and Ruari Harvey shared their talents with P5. The boys were not impressed with my skills the previous week and suggested that they take over a PE lesson and share their knowledge of basketball with the rest of the class. Both Finlay and Ruari train every week with West Lothian Wolves and put together a whole lesson to share with the class. The boys split the class into 2 groups and each took one half of the class. Finlay decided to teach his group layups and how to shoot and Ruari taught dribbling and triple threat, the groups then changed over half way through the lesson to give all children a chance of doing all activities. Both boys were excellent at giving their groups instruction and modelling exactly what they had to do. All of the children in P5a, including Finlay and Ruari, loved their lesson and have learned new skills along the way. Keep your eye out on the blog for future masterclasses as we now have a long list of children wanting to share their expertise……from drama to gymnastics.

Book fair
The school is having a book fair. Last year we earned £813.69 and this year we are going to try and beat it. The children can pick a book of there choice. There is lots of books to pick from. Some books are too long for the infants and nursery but some of them are suitable for all ages. Some books are captain underpants, my adorable pony and more. The nursery came to the book fair and the P6 helped

P2 Number
Primary 2 have been hard at work recently developing their understanding of 2 digit numbers, as well as working on addition and subtraction skills.
To support this work we have been exploring and using a resource called Numicon.
We learnt that each coloured shape represents a different number, and first of all, we played some games to help us recognise the value of each shape quickly and confidently.
Then we began to use the shapes to help us investigate different ways to make 11, or 14 or 15 etc. This helped us to practise and consolidate the number bonds we had been learning. We also used the Numicon to make larger 2 digit numbers such as 32, 56 or 79.
We were then able to show 10 more than or ten less than, and we could describe clearly what was happening each time.
We have also been very busy on Sumdog, Hit the Button and other games to practise our number skills, and we are keen to take part in the Sumdog competition this week.
P5 – A Titanic Effort to Recreate 1912!
Mrs Campbell and Miss Anderson have been overwhelmed by the amazing reproductions of ‘Titanic’ cabins which were produced by Primary 5 this term.
Every one which was brought in to school seemed to contain even more detail than the last, from teeny-weeny bowler hats to clocks showing the exact time the ship went down to beautifully tiled Edwardian bathrooms. It was clear that the children loved learning about life aboard the iconic ship and they were fascinated (and a bit scared!) to learn about its sad end. The children also focused on the class system in place during this time and they learned about the impact this had on the unfortunate passengers of Titanic; the number of 3rd class passengers who lost their lives greatly outweighing those in 2nd or 1st class.
Hopefully you can see from our photographs the level of detail included in some of these amazing cabins, with some children choosing to recreate the stark austerity of steerage and others opting for the opulence of 1st class. We know that these creations sometimes need a bit of adult help, so thanks again to all the children (and their helpers) for their amazing creativity – well done!
P7/6 Europe Challenge
This term we have been learning about the European Union. We were given a challenge for a travel show. We were in groups of three and two. we had to choose a country in the European Union and make a travel show about it. The countries included Greece, Finland, Spain, Italy, and Denmark. The Success Criteria included :

We had great fun presenting our travel shows as well as being informed about the different aspects of culture. We are going to make up a Euroquiz to share our knowledge at Parents’ evening. We look forward testing your knowledge of The Europe Union.

Primary 4 make Roman mosaics!
This week Primary 4 have been finding out about Roman mosaics. The children looked at mosaics and tiling found in Roman homes and architecture and observed the different colours, patterns and shapes they could see. Have a look at the boys and girls in action:

P6 French classroom talk
P6 were making posters and they were writing in English what they want to know in French that they can use in the class everyday such as can I go to the toilet, what time is it, get ready for lunch, wash your hands and more.
