Anytime, Anywhere Learning: Socrative

Yesterday, Primary 5 used Socrative to demonstrate our learning about space and our Solar System. We completed a ‘Space Race’ which involved us being put into teams and racing to answer 25 questions all about what we have been learning about through our IDL context, Project Planetarium. We were able to track our progress on the SMART Board, which definitely encouraged us to be quick and accurate with our answers.

Today we expanded our use of Socrative, using it to demonstrate our knowledge of fractions during a mental maths warm up. We had to answer a range of different styles of questions including multiple choice and true or false. We’re looking forward to exploring other ways we can use Socrative in our classroom.

Mission 4: Astronaut Adventures

Mission 4 arrives at project Project Planetarium this week and it was all about Space Missions!

Part 1:

We used Twig on Glow videos to investigate how the news reported Neil Armstrong landing on the moon compared to Tim Peake at the International Space Station. We recognised that videos have changed over the years, for example videos now are clearer, coloured pictures, sharper images and have zoom. We also noticed how Tim Peake used Social Media to share his adventures in space via Twitter and a Video Log, this is something they could not do during Neil Armstrong’s mission.

Part 2:

Each Home Team are currently researching 2 space missions each. We made notes under the following headings:

  • Name of the Mission
  • Date of the mission
  • Important information about the mission

We skimmed and scanned a selection of websites and books to find out the relevant information. We had to use key words to research using different search engines. We used Yammer to make a list of useful child friendly websites that we could use – this was so we could help each other. We will use this information to make a timeline of missions.

Part 3:

We have been learning about the job of a astronaut. We used books, videos and websites to discuss:

  • The role of an astronaut
  • The experience you need
  • The skills/ qualities you need

We found out that you need to have a qualification in Science or Technologies, and that is was useful to have a knowledge of different languages. We will use the information we found out to write a job advert for an Astronaut.

We also have been trying to build our own spacecraft – watch this space!

The Great Deserted Island STEM Challenge One

IMG_0243 IMG_0244 IMG_0245 IMG_0246 IMG_0247

LI. We are learning to construct a model using measurement, area, force and motion, scientific process and properties of shapes.

SC. We can plan, design and build a hut that will with stand a small wind storm

SC. We can work together to share ideas.

SC. We can adapt and change our plans as required.

SC. We will test and evaluate our design as appropriate.

This week P2 have been trying to help Sir Harley Houndstooth III survive on the deserted island by constructing a hut that he could use to shelter in away from the tropical storms. We worked in teams and each team built our own hut. We learned lots about the skills we need to work effectively as part of a team such as, good cooperation, good listening skills and effective use of time. After we built our huts we then tested them to see if they would survive the storm (using a hair drier.) We discussed what a fair test is and decided how to make the test fair. We are very happy to report that none of the huts fell over but most of them moved and we recorded how far then moved in centimetres. Each team then set group targets for what good team work will look like and sound like for the next challenge.

Next week we will be helping Sir Harley Houndstooth III by building a bridge we will keep you posted on how we got on.

P.5/4 Homework

Homework for P.5/4 this week is as follows:

Topic

Following on from learning about the phases of the moon in class, use your moon observation sheet to record how the appearance of the moon changes over the next four weeks. Do not worry if you cannot complete this challenge as I know lots of you will be asleep before you can see the moon!

Reading

The Dream Catchers The Country Pancake – Anne Fine (chapter 2)

The Gangster Grannies The Guard Dog – Dick King-Smith (chapter 2)

The Cookie Readers The Ghost Teacher – Tony Bradman (chapter 2)

The Ruthless Readers The Great Spaghetti Suit – Alan MacDonald (p.17-31)

Everyone should write a character profile about the main character or a supporting character. This should include these details: name, where they are from, approximate age, appearance, family, job, likes, dislikes, any other details that you think are important.

You should also draw a picture of the character as part of your profile.

Maths

Write about or draw at least five occasions at home when you have seen or heard about fractions. For example, you might draw a meal that was split into four portions (quarters) or you may write about how you were told to get ready to leave in half an hour. Our lives are full of fractions!

Spelling

Follow instructions from your Spelling teacher.

Primary 6 investigate negative numbers

This term we have been learning about negative numbers through our Number Talks sessions and linking them to our daily mental maths.

LI:  We are learning to count forwards and backwards on a negative number line

SC:  I can identify zero as a place holder

I can count forwards and back from zero

I can identify number patterns within negative numbers

We completed lots of Number Talks to gain a good understanding of numbers below zero and linked our learning to real life situations, for example, when reading temperature gauges.

We then used our knowledge to place ourselves in a human number line along our classroom wall and practiced counting forwards and backwards. Then we up levelled the challenge to count forwards and back in 2s, 5s and 10s starting at different places along the line.image image

Busy start to our final term!

P7 has got off to a busy start this term.

In Primary 7 we have been learning about Forensic Careers. These jobs are vital in a crime investigation.

The first thing we did was we learnt about all the possible jobs in Forensic Science. Such as a Toxicologist, a SOC (Scene of crime) officer, a Pathologist and much more. We then discussed the job requirements if you were to apply for one of these jobs; we came up with different answers to what we would need in order to work in the Forensic environment. We thought we needed to have good eyesight, curiosity, imagination, be very good with details, have integrity and have the ability to keep accurate records.

After we chose one of the jobs to research and make an advert.

In Science, we completed an experiment to see whether or not an orange would float or sink in water.  First we had to make a prediction on whether we thought it would float with the peel on and then we had to predict whether it would float once it had been peeled. Here are some of our predictions:

‘It has it’s skin on so it is not going to absorb water so it will float’

‘It will float as the peel will make it lighter’

‘The peel has small holes in it creating air pockets, air will fill these making it float’

We discovered that when the skin was kept on, the orange would float, but as soon as we peeled the orange it sunk, meaning that our predictions were correct.

This term we are looking forward to learning all about STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths), and learning new skills that will help us in the world of work.

As P7’s we have our transition visits to look forward to, our leavers assembly and our final trip as a year group. We are all looking forward to the journey.

P1 Funny Faces

LI: We are learning to use a simple map with a key and symbols.

SC: I understand the concept and function of a map.

SC: I understand the use of symbols and a key.

SC: I can transfer information on a map to reality.

Last week, both Primary 1 classes started to explore positional and directional language, and enjoyed creating and navigating simple mazes.

This afternoon, we went outside to progress our learning in the sunshine. After discussing our prior experiences with maps, we talked about their features and clarified how to use a key with symbols.

In small groups, the children then had to work collaboratively to recreate a ‘funny face’ using a map with a key. This was even more challenging than the children first thought. Only one team member could move one object to the ‘face’ at a time. Furthermore they couldn’t bring the map with them, so they had to analyse the map very carefully before travelling to the ‘face’. Evie pointed out that it would have been much easier if they could just take the map with them!

We hope to apply our new mapping skills to increasingly challenging orienteering games during the next few weeks.
