This week, the whole school community got their baking hats on to take part in the first Mid Calder Bake Off. A group of invited judges had a very tough job on their hands choosing the winners and runners up in each category, as the standard was exceptionally high. A huge well done to all who took part and supported this event, and a big thank you to our guest judges. We certainly have some talented bakers in our midst. The Great British Bake Off, here we come…
Our worthy winners were:
On Friday 4th March, four Primary Six children visited Howden Park Centre, along with 18 other schools from across West Lothian, to participate in the annual Euroquiz.
There were lots of very tricky questions focused on the EU, history, sport and culture of countries within the EU and a variety of flag and country questions.
We participated really well and thoroughly enjoyed our morning. A big thanks to Cole, Ayla, Jamie and Sean for doing so much preparation and studying for this event. You did a great job!

“Mrs Barber told us her mum sewed the Willow Pattern,” said Ava. “We designed our invitations after Mrs Barber told us the Willow story.”
Bernice said, ” I was helping to hang the bunting. I made some bunting to make our nursery nice like the cafe we visited.”
“I’m doing the food in the tea room, I was collecting the stuff from the tables.” said Ava.
Zara’s mummy came, she had a scone.
“Mummy came to our nursery for Mother’s Day, she had a scone,” said Charlie.
Ruaridh said, “It was Wednesday, she came that day. She ate Mrs Findlay’s cake. I eated a biscuit and a wee cake.”
Parents’ comments:
“Wonderful opportunity to involve parents! Kids and parents equally enjoy this. Nice to bring parents together too. my child was so excited to share her nursery experience with mum.”

“Tea party was lovely, very nice to be treated. Loved the victoria sponge.”
The afternoon class had very special letters to post. They were inviting guests to a tea party in the nursery. Cayla said,” 1,2,3,4,5,6 people walked to the Post Office. We wore shiny jackets so people know we are a nursery group.”
Max said, ” We saw mole hills.” Jake and Cayla found the Post Office sign in the village.
Jake said, ” we posted some letters, I put a stamp on the letter, 63p for the stamp.” Jessica received her change and receipt from the lady.
Lacy said, “I was looking at other things to buy in the Post Office, they sell newspapers and comics.” Jake said, “the letter came the next day.”
We hope all our guests come to the tea party.
Following our school Burns Competition, Lexie (P4), Cailin (P5), Luca (P6) and Abby (P7) were selected by our panel of judges to represent our school at the West Lothian Schools Festival 2016.
Tonight the four pupils attended the competitions at St. Kentigern’s Academy and recited their poems to the judges from Fauldhouse and Crofthead Burns Club and to an audience of guests from all across West Lothian.
Abby received the award for best verse speaking in the Primary 6/7 category. She received a Burns Trophy and an individual trophy. She will now be invited along to the National Burns Competition.
A huge well done to the pupils who confidently represented our school at this competition, and to their parents and teachers for supporting them.

Hope you have all had a great weekend and managed to make the most of the fantastic weather…..but also hope you’ve been thinking, planning and shopping for you Bake-Off entry. I know Miss Burton has decided to bake for the first time…shopping was stressful for her and she had to ask myself where to buy ‘condensed milk’ in the supermarket…well done Miss Burton we look forward to seeing the finished bake.
Just a small reminder it’s only 4 DAYS to go – The Book Lions look forward to receiving all your contributions on Thursday morning. Parents/family if you could hand yours into the front office on Thursday morning a member of the Book Lions will be there to give you a form and receive your bake and recipe…we then look forward to seeing you in the hall from after 1.30!
Pupils please remember to bring your entry in appropriate packaging (if you would like this returned let us know on the day). We will distribute a card for you to complete and hand in with your bake (on Thursday) at school on Wednesday – don’t worry if you loose it we will have more on the day. Please don’t forget to bring a copy of the recipe to be sold/donated with your cake and remember to bring in your own donation to take another cake away!
We will also have a book swapping stall – so look those books out now and bring along any day this week.

This week some of the morning group visited the local cafe in the village. We wanted to find out what we could serve in our Willow Tea Room in the nursery. We all walked down wearing safety jackets. “On the way we spotted numbers on people’s doors, 15,16,17,18, 19,20″ said Imogen. Carlie said, ” We held hands to cross the road and used good listening ears and looked left and right to cross safely.” “In the cafe we all sat at the tables and looked at the menu,” I had a scone and apple juice,” said Rocco. Amelia-Jo said, “We paid money.” We had a super time, learning lots on the journey and experiencing a visit to a cafe.

The Bake-Off is back! Bigger and better than ever! Mid Calder Primary School’s BookLions is proud to present The Mid Calder Bake-Off! Get out your whisks and put on your aprons because it’s coming to Mid Calder Primary School hall, on Thursday 3rd March 2016.
It will be at 1:30pm-2:30pm, so bring your cakes and bakes to the hall in the morning, where we will be waiting to collect your sweet treats. We promise we won’t eat them!
If you have any gluten-free or nut free cakes and bakes please inform us, and we will add this to your description card. If you have used any Fairtrade products in your bakes, we will have a table for that too.

The cake designs can be to do with your favourite book/character or they could just be a normal design. Remember to bring a copy of the recipe you used when baking or bring in the book for everyone to see. Reasons being to make sure everyone knows what they’re eating and that they’re allowed it, also reading is what we encourage and we thought it would be fun to let you read the recipes yourself!
We will have special guest judges and your parents, carers, grandparents will also be invited in during this time. We invite you to take another cake home to try (and the recipe) for a small donation, if you want to take your own cake home afterwards please let us know when delivering it to the hall. The donations you make are to raise money for our school library, to get it into better condition. Oh, and did we forget to tell you about the prize? Your cakes and bakes will be judged before parents and carers arrive. The prize will be a… surprise because that’s the best kind!
Finally, if you have any old books or books you don’t read anymore, we will be having a book swap table, to get you reading.
We hope you will put in the effort to get baking and bring in some delicious cakes and treats, for everyone to enjoy!

During our last JLT session, the Community Crusaders went to Cunigar House in Mid Calder village to visit the tenants that live there. We went to Cunigar House to get to know our older community and to share our learning with them.
We brought along some games such as Kapla and Dominoes and some of our reading books and writing jotters.
Some of us enjoyed drawing pictures with the tenants.

“I drew Beth’s two budgies in a cage for her. One was green and one was blue. I also drew the school badge.”- Hana, P5/4.
At the end of our time there we joined together to sing ‘Caledonia’ and ‘Ye Canny Shove Yer Grannie’. The tenants seemed to really enjoy our singing. We all signed a card at the end to say thank you for having us and we hope to see you all again.

Safer Internet Day 2016 – Friday 12th February at the new Bathgate Cinema
West Lothian Council is inviting parents and carers to meet industry experts on internet safety, at the end of a week in which information on keeping children safe online will be promoted through the Council’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, in support of Safer Internet Day 2016.
What is Safer Internet Day?
Globally, Safer Internet Day involves over a hundred countries, and is supported by the European Commission and national Safer Internet Centres across Europe. In West Lothian, an event is being hosted at the new Bathgate Cinema offering advice on setting parental controls on any kind of device, from technology industry experts.
What will be happening on the day?
Police Scotland’s School Link Officers will introduce and provide commentary on the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) films, giving parents and carers first-hand experience of the internet safety lessons pupils receive in school.
The CEOP film screenings will take place at a free event at the new Bathgate Cinema (formerly St. David’s Church, George Street) on Friday 12 February from 10:00 to 12:00.
Not to be confused with the Regal Community Theatre, the new Bathgate Cinema is in St. David’s Church on the pedestrian precinct in Bathgate, opposite Boots.
The event is free and open to everyone.
Expert advice will then be offered at information stalls from 12 noon until 3pm, with representatives including staff from retailer Game, Vodafone, and Police Scotland.

Leader of West Lothian Council John McGinty, said: “Safer Internet Day provides the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community.
“The internet is integral to life today, and will play a crucial role in the future of our young people.
