Life in P5a

All of the children have got off to a great start over the past few weeks and have settled well into the routines of P5. We have been building our class community and getting to know each other a bit better. One of the first things that we had to do was decide on what theme we wanted for our class charter and we all decided on a ‘cinema’ theme, I think you will agree that it turned out fantastically, we then had to decide on what the most important children’s rights were that we wanted to respect within our classroom, not only did we discuss what ones were relevant within our classroom but we also spoke about what we could do within our class to respect these rights. We have all signed out class contract and can’t wait for a happy and successful year in P5a.

In our class we also have our ‘Class Shout Out Wall’ where if someone feels that somebody is doing a fabulous job or if someone has helped you, we can write a compliment on a post it and place it on someones ‘face’…….. It’s ok we got everyone to draw a self portrait for the wall so no-one will be coming home covered in post-its! The wall seems to be covered in post-its on a daily basis as we have such a great class where everyone is kind and helps each other.

We are all looking forward to the next year in P5a.

Aims Assembly

On Friday we had an assembly to share our new school aims that the pupil council rewrote into child friendly language. Each stage took a different aim.

  • P1: We aim to have fun and interesting learning where everyone tries their best.

  • P2: We aim to live by our school values and have a welcoming school.
  • P3: We aim to develop our skills and recognise achievements.

  • P4: We aim to provide an exciting place to learn and to learn about things that interest us.
  • P5: We aim to connect our school life to our home life and our local community.
  • P6: We aim to become independent learners by making our own choices and decisions.
  • P7: We aim to be prepared for transitions and the world of work.

The nursery also created a video to share their values with us.

September School Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer

When we left school for the holidays in June everything seemed in place for the start of the new school session, but we have begun the session with no P7 teacher. We are very pleased Miss Tuke has secured a permanent position as principal teacher in East Lothian but it has altered the planning we had in place for our upper primary children. However, we have been very fortunate to have Mr Clancy return to the school and he will work with Mrs Redmond to teach the P7 class until we have a new Acting PT in position. Despite this setback we have had a very good start to the new term and the children seem very settled in their new classes. The new Primary 1 children have already embraced the school routine for coming in with Miss Prior and Mrs Walker having lovely quiet classes to begin the day.

The children have been looking at the school aims, with each class taking an aim and looking closely at what it means for us in our school. They will present to each other at our assembly this week so everyone will be aware of what the aims mean to the children and staff and that these are the aims we will live and learn by.

I have high expectations of what I believe our children can achieve and having spent a lot of time in classes over the first few days I believe our children and staff have high aspirations of what they can achieve. I thought I would share a poem about always doing your best and if we all do our best then we can reach these aspirations we have!                                                                                                                                                                                                    Mary McKenzie

Term 4 Celebration Assembly

Today we had our final Celebration Assembly. The Technical Troopers past and present were recognised for their contributions across our whole school community, from supporting teachers to setting up for CEMs, presenting to WL Head Teachers and staff to organising our Digital Award Accrediation. They have worked very hard to embed digital learning across our school and nursery.

We awarded Remarkable, STEM Superstars and Top Scorers for the term. Congratulations to everyone who received an award.

Congratulations to Cunigar for winning the house cup this term.

P5a Transition Challenge

L.I. we are learning to encourage learning and confidence in others

We are learning to recognise our skills and abilities and discuss our learning

We are learning to support others in preparing for their next stage at school.

This week in class, P5a worked in groups to prepare a presentation for the current P4s all about their transition to Primary 5. Each group focused on a different curricular area; Inter -Disciplinary Learning, Health & Wellbeing, Maths and Language. One group also focused on the routines of the school day and the extra responsibilities of being in P5.

As a group, we reflected on the learning which has taken place throughout our P5 journey. It was fun to remember all of the things we’ve done and we had to jog our memories to think of everything and make sure we didn’t forget anything!

We used Powerpoint and Sway and tried to make our presentations interesting and informative; we hopefully made our P5 experience sound like fun. After each group had presented, we answered questions from P4s.

Some of the things they wanted to know were;

‘Will we have the same lunchtimes?

‘Will we do all the same topics?’

‘Will the Maths be harder?’.

We hopefully gave full answers to all their questions and we tried to reassure them about moving on to the next stage in their school life.

P5B’s Transition Challenge

Learning Intentions: We are learning to help encourage learning and confident in others
We are learning to recognise our skills and abilities, and discuss our learning
We are learning to support others in preparing for their next stage at school

This week, P5B took part in Mid Calder’s transition challenge where we were asked to create a presentation for the current Primary 4s to give them an insight into what life is like in Primary 5.

We chose to present this in the form of videos, utilising our drama, team work and presentation skills to meet the success criteria and describe the different expectations, learning experiences, routines and specific experiences from P5. Primary 4B were then invited to watch our videos and had the opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns. Hopefully you are all feeling confident and happy

It is Time…for a Lion King Party!

To celebrate the incredible success of The Lion King Junior musical, Primary 4 and 5 got to sit back, relax and become an audience themselves to a special viewing of The Lion King DVD. We had ‘slimy, yet satisfying’ animal themed treats and popcorn to enjoy during the movie. It was a fantastic way to round off the huge amount of hard work that has gone into the last 8 weeks.

Thank you to Mrs McKenzie and Miss Burton for the celebration cakes, and for popping into our party for a visit. We have really appreciated all of your positive feedback about our production.
