Number Talks in the Snow!
Today we had a number talks with a difference! Miss Burton took us outside into the snow/frost, she gave us a calculation and we had to write it down in the snow and write the answer. When we came back into class we showed the photos on the SMARTBoard and we had to explain what strategy we used to add 9. Some of us counted on 9, some of used a friendly number – we added 10 and then subtracted one and some counted onto the next 10, and added the remainder. Then we discussed which strategy was the most efficient. We had lots of fun!
Gie it laldy wi a poem :)
Within the infant area, we will be practising some Scots poems and songs for Burns Day. Please find the words to the Scots poems ‘Heron’ and ‘Crocodile’ below. We will be reciting our poems during the middle of next week.
If you click on the title of each poem, you can listen and read your poem along with a video link.
Humphy-backit heron
Nearly as big as me
Stands at the waterside
Fishin for his tea.
His skinnie-ma-linkie lang legs
Juist like reeds
Cheats aa the puddocks
Soomin mang the weeds,
Here’s ane comin,
Grup it by the leg!
It sticks in his thrapple
Then slides doun his craig .
Neist comes a rottan ,
A rottan soomin past,
Oot gangs the lang neb
And has the rottan fast.
He jabs it, he stabs it,
Sune it’s in his wame ,
Flip-flap in the air
Heron flees hame.
When doukin in the River Nile
I met a muckle crocodile.
He flicked his tail, he blinked his ee,
Syne bared his ugsome teeth at me.
Says I, ‘I never saw the like,
Cleaning your teeth maun be a fyke!
What sort a besom do ye hae
To brush a set o teeth like thae?”
The crocodile said, ‘Nane ava.
I never brush my teeth at aa!
A wee bird redds them up, ye see,
And saves me monie a dentist’s fee.

Handwashing Video
We are learning to explain ways of preventing the spreading of diseases.
- I can explain different ways of preventing the spread of germs.
- I can describe the steps of how to wash your hands correctly.
This term in Science and Health and Wellbeing we have been learning about diseases, their symptoms, ways of preventing them and why we get vaccines. We also investigated the correct steps in washing your hands and the importance of washing your hands. Please watch our video below.
Torch Light Procession
On Saturday night, some of the pupils from Primary 1-3 braved the weather to come and sing some of their nativity songs at the Kirk of Calder Parish Church. They sounded fantastic and there was a real sense of community spirit shown by the number of people who came along to attend the service and to support them.

Christmas Lunch
This week MCPS had their Christmas Lunch. We were lucky enough to have a team of Primary 7s serve us our lunch, and our teachers joined us wearing their Christmas jumper. Some children commented that is was ‘The best lunch ever!’. A big thank you to Mrs Ritchie in the office and all the dinner ladies for organising our Christmas lunch.
