Learning Letter P1 T3

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to Term 3 in Primary 1. We are looking forward to a busy and fun term. The highlights of last term included our local area trip, as part of our Travelling Ted IDL and of course our marvellous ‘Midwife Crisis’ Nativity. This term we will be starting our new IDL context for learning, Whatever the Weather.

Term 2 Celebration Assembly

On December 22nd, we welcomed parents and friends along to our Celebration Assembly so that pupils could receive their STEM Super Star and Successful Speller awards. We also announced the Top Scorers for each house.

A big thank you to Mr Welsh for inspiring us by sharing his interpretation of our school motto, Believe, Achieve, Succeed, and for presenting our Primary 3 pupils with their certificate for coming first in West Lothian’s Sumdog Maths Contest. Certificates were also awarded to our pupils who came in the top 50 in the competition.

Well done to all of our award winners!

P1’s Christmas Party!

P1 had an absolutely amazing time at their Christmas party this afternoon. All the boys and girls looked fantastic in their party outfits and really enjoyed participating in all their chosen Christmas party games such as musical statues, musical bumps, pass the parcel, Christmas corners and a dancing competition.

Well done to all our fantastic prize winners demonstrating some really groovy moves on the dance floor!

We also had a special visitor, santa, who popped in while he was passing in his sleigh on the way to his workshop to deliver a special gift to each of the boys and girls in P1. We all enjoyed singing Jingle Bells to welcome him in.

Merry Christmas P1!

Mrs Walker & Miss Prior

P1W’s Book Bag Gifting

Last Thursday, we invited our P7 buddies to our class to gift our book bag’s as part of Book Week. Our P7 buddies enjoyed reading the stories with the children and showing P1 what they had been given in their book bag.

We also invited our relatives and friends to our class on Thursday afternoon, to participate in activities related to the three picture books included in our book bag (Gorilla Loves Vanilla, Little Owl’s Egg and The Fourth Bonniest Baby in Dundee) and gain ideas of how to use this fantastic resource at home.

We were all very excited to receive our book bags and share them with our families and friends. Thank you to everyone who was able to visit P1W!

P1P’s Brilliant Book Bug Bags

P1P have had a very exciting week for Scottish Book Week!

At the start of the week we spent time reading and exploring the 3 picture books that were shortlisted for The Bookbug Picture Book Prize, we also watched some fantastic videos of the authors reading their stories. After we watched the author videos we voted for our favourite book using gems, ‘Gorilla Loves Vanilla’ was the winner of the vote!

On Thursday we were very excited because our P7 Buddies came down to our class to deliver very special P1 Bookbug Bag. These bags were filled with fantastic activities and stories for us to use at home. Later in the afternoon our parents came in and we shared different activities we can use with our Bookbug bags!

We had a fantastic time and thank you to everyone who was able to come in and visit!

P1W’s Travelling Ted Open Afternoon

Last Wednesday, we invited our relatives and friends to our class to see our showcase of learning on our IDL context of “Travelling Ted visits Mid Calder”, to help us celebrate the school’s 40th birthday this year.

Through our IDL context we have developed our sense of place as well as our understanding of our local environment. We have studied and located the key features and landmarks of Mid Calder and discussed the different journeys we make. We have also explored the stories of “We are going on a bear hunt” by Micahel Rosen and “Leaf man” by Louis Ehlert, utilizing our outdoor environment and things we have collected to enhance our learning.

We were all very excited to share our learning with our families and friends and we were able to confidently say what we had learned over the past 6 weeks. Thank you to everyone who was able to visit and well done to the children in P1W!

Open Afternoon – P1P

This Wednesday we opened our classrooms up to our families for our Open Afternoon and shared all our learning from our ‘Travelling Ted comes to Mid Calder’ IDL Context. Over the past 6 weeks we have been developing our awareness and understanding of our local environment. We have developed our knowledge of key features and landmarks in Mid Calder and how these play a part in our everyday journeys. We have also explored the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ through various activities and using our outdoor environment.

We loved showing our families around and showcasing our work. Thank you to everyone who was able to come and see what we have been learning.
