Mrs Sturrock visited P2s and P3s today!

Mrs Sturrock visited P2 and 3 and told us all about our brain and how it works.

We asked her lots of questions such as:

Do hamsters have the smallest brain?

What makes you you?

Can the brain break?

Does the right side of the brain control the left? (Ewan, who was trying to trick our special guest)

How is there enough space for everything in your mind?

The big message from the Educational Psychologist was that we need to challenge our minds to help it grow and that we learn from our mistakes. Sometimes we have to overlearn to remember information that we learn!

We learnt the big words neuroplasticity and neurons.

P7 trip to the botanics

P7s went on an excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. Their IDL topic has been ‘How does our garden grow?’ with a focus on plants. One of the outcomes they have been working towards is:

Through carrying out practical activities and investigations, I can show how plants have benefited society. SCN 2-02b.

At the Royal Botanics the groups each got a workshop with Ginger who worked on developing their understanding of how important plants are to the world and how almost everything we eat or use can be traced back to plants. We also got to explore the beautiful grounds. We may have had a very wet day, with some thunder too, but we didn’t let that spoil the experience.

P7 Fair

On Thursday 1st June the P7 pupils held a fair to raise money for their P7 Leaver’s Party. There were lots of stalls with things to do or buy. All pupils in the school had the chance to come along. Some of the stalls included:

  • Soak the House Captains/Vice Captains
  • Buy slime
  • Baking stall
  • Lucky Dip
  • Temporary Tattoos
  • Beat the Goalie

They raised over £500 which is fantastic! A huge thank you to all the boys and girls who came along and helped the event to be a great success. Also a thank you to the P7s for their hard work and to everyone who donated baking.

Mid Calder Gala Day

The shone on Mid Calder for their annual Children’s Gala Day. We had a great turn out from our school community to walk with us in the procession.

The Primary 7 pupils had a special treat!

We entered three school teams in the Gala Relay Races. Thank you to the children who represented our school, especially the boys team who won!

You can find more photos on the West Lothian Flickr page.

Thank you to the Gala committee for organising such a fun, community event.

P7 Skype with West Calder High School

On Wednesday the P7 pupils going to West Calder High School had a Skype session with S1 pupils. They had prepared questions that they wanted to ask. During the session the P7 pupils took turns to ask their questions and S1 pupils answered them. It was great to hear about life at the school from the pupils. The Head Teacher and Head of Year also came to have a quick chat. Skype was a great way to talk to the high school and ask our questions without having to travel all the way there.
