P2/3 Forest Foragers

Primary 2 and 3 Forage in the Forest 28th September 2016

The walk was brilliant – it is amazing how much more incidental learning happens when you get outdoors. We saw birds migrating, found cep boletus and examined the parts of the fungi, created journey sticks and transient artworks, recorded interesting finds on talking tins and i-pads, and gathered data from layers of the forest as tally marks. Some tasted brambles for the first time! On our next adventure this week we gathered rosehips to make a healthy syrup.

Roman jewellery is back in fashion!

LI:  We are learning to create a piece of Roman jewellery.

This week, P5a were set the challenge to design their own Roman cuff or Roman bangle.
“I used the internet to find out what the cuffs looked like and made my own.” (Scott)

The designs included a brief description of their jewellery and an explanation of the specific Roman features they included.
“I have a sword and a Roman helmet that the gladiators wore.” (Jamie)
“My Roman numerals are Roman numbers and made it more Roman.” (Freya)
“Romans who wore a lot of jewellery were rich and so mine has emeralds in it.” (Caitlin)

P5a were also keen to explain where and when the Romans may have worn their cuffs or bangles.
“At celebrations” (Niamh)
“and when at banquets.” (Leah)
“Soldiers had cuffs that protected their arms and could have had a weapon in it.” (Fraser)

Success criteria:  I can design and create a piece of Roman jewellery.

Kind Wishes at the Nursery

Today was a very special day at the nursery. Mrs Barber was presented with flowers, cards and many gifts from the nursery children and parents.Miss Thompson explained to the children that Mrs Barber had been teaching nursery children for 36 years and one parent said she had known Mrs Barber all her life. It was very emotional for all involved but we wish her a happy retirement and will miss her in the nursery. One more task before she goes…Our trip to North Berwick. Thank you for making this a special day. She has many happy memories, not only of her time at Mid Calder but throughout her teaching career in West Lothian.

What shall we have for snack today?

We searched the nursery garden and found the rhubarb patch. It was quite hard pulling up the stalks but we managed. Chop, chop, choppity chop, chop off the bottom and chop off the top. Staight into the pot for cooking. Now for the topping, lots of butter and flour then spread it evenly over the fruit. Now into the oven. The best bit mmmmmmmm. We are discovering where food comes from as we choose, prepare and taste different foods.

After making snack children have the opportunity to check on the weather situation and update the calendar. Todays chefs completed the task to a high standard.

Primary 6 break a Guinness World Record

On Thursday 2nd June, Primary 6 pupils traveled to the Almondvale football stadium to participate in a world record attempt.

The attempt was to break the record for the largest Djembe drum ensemble, sustained for five minutes.

After working very hard in our music workshops, we arrived to sit in the front two rows, in our purple baseball caps.  We practiced the different sections and fills.  The noise in the stadium was incredible with over 400 pupils all playing the different rhythms at the same time!

We had lots of pictures and video clips taken from a variety of places, including a drone cam!

After a tense few minutes while the stewards collated their information, Anna from “Officially Amazing” announced to the excited audience that we had broken the world record and sustained the performance for 6 minutes 20 seconds!

We were delighted!  What an amazing experience and we are really looking forward to displaying our certificate proudly in our school.
