It’s all about the acting in P7/6!

‘Alice’ the musical is well under way and in preparation for this P7/6 have been looking at play scripts and how they differ from stories.

LI: We are learning to identify the differences between a play and a story.

SC: I can identify stage directions

I can identify dialogue.

I can confidently discuss the differences.

Pupils have been looking at a story and how this could be changed into a script. Children had to identify dialogue and stage directions then had the opportunity to write their own dialogue and stage directions and act this out in front of the class. I can safely say, we have a very talented bunch in P7/6.

All of the upper area are working very hard at the moment to perfect our performances  for the show in a few weeks time. We are very busy making props and scenery and everyone is involved. We look forward to sharing our talents with you soon.

P7/6 WW2 Leaders

LI: We are learning to identify the leaders of the ‘Allied’ and ‘Axis’ Countries.

All of the children worked in groups to research one of the five leaders – Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. Once the children had completed their leader they then began to draw a life size picture. When all leaders are complete, each group will present their leader and mini biography to the rest of the class.

As our topic is WW2, we have been letting the air raid siren off during different times of the day to give the children some experience of what it might be like during the war. As you can see from our pictures below the children know exactly what to do. Can anyone spot Katie?

P7/6 Class Charter

Primary 7/6 have been thinking about the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child and how we can respect these rights in school.  As a class we discussed the Rights of a Child and looked at each article, deciding upon what article’s we would respect within the classroom and what we would do to respect them. As we are reading ‘The World’s Worst Children’ at the moment, we decided that this would be the theme of our class charter. We have also been discussing how our school values link to our class charter. The children all designed their own ‘World’s Worst Children’….Gusty Gail, Taco Tim, Itchy Izzy and Debbie Dragon Girl, to name but a few!! We have all signed this to show that we will work together to build and maintain a great community over the coming year.

Busy start to our final term!

P7 has got off to a busy start this term.

In Primary 7 we have been learning about Forensic Careers. These jobs are vital in a crime investigation.

The first thing we did was we learnt about all the possible jobs in Forensic Science. Such as a Toxicologist, a SOC (Scene of crime) officer, a Pathologist and much more. We then discussed the job requirements if you were to apply for one of these jobs; we came up with different answers to what we would need in order to work in the Forensic environment. We thought we needed to have good eyesight, curiosity, imagination, be very good with details, have integrity and have the ability to keep accurate records.

After we chose one of the jobs to research and make an advert.

In Science, we completed an experiment to see whether or not an orange would float or sink in water.  First we had to make a prediction on whether we thought it would float with the peel on and then we had to predict whether it would float once it had been peeled. Here are some of our predictions:

‘It has it’s skin on so it is not going to absorb water so it will float’

‘It will float as the peel will make it lighter’

‘The peel has small holes in it creating air pockets, air will fill these making it float’

We discovered that when the skin was kept on, the orange would float, but as soon as we peeled the orange it sunk, meaning that our predictions were correct.

This term we are looking forward to learning all about STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths), and learning new skills that will help us in the world of work.

As P7’s we have our transition visits to look forward to, our leavers assembly and our final trip as a year group. We are all looking forward to the journey.

Lights, Camera, Action

Today we turned the upper area into a movie theatre, where only the best actors, directors and cameramen were invited. The children have been working hard to create their own blockbuster movies featuring either, Dizzy, Fluffy or Spike. Each group focused on the three C’s and S’s…….colour, character, camera and sound, story and setting and today was the day where they showcased their talents.  Showing in our cinema was, London Crisis, Spike Bond and Fluffy Dimension, to name but a few, however there could only be 3 winners. Each child voted for the movie they felt demonstrated the skills that we had been learning in class, portrayed a good storyline and also made us laugh.  And the winners were…….

Well done to everyone on completing their film. It was evident, from the movies, that the children has used a lot of what they had learned throughout their topic and that they thoroughly enjoyed making their own movies. P7 Internet Safety

On Tuesday the 9th of February it was Internet Safety Day. P7 took part in some activities based on Internet Safety. Miss Anderson gave us some cards with actions on them such as, you are annoyed, disagree with everyone, you are sad, agree with everyone. We then had to walk around the classroom and when someone spoke to you we had to act them out to create the online feel. Miss Anderson then showed us some online messages and comments,we then had to go to the emotion that it made us feel; upset, happy, curious, laugh it off, not bothered, angry and worried. We then discussed why the messaged made us feel a certain way. Finally we watched a video about the ‘Magna Carter’ ( a document that establishes the principle that everyone is subject to the law) of online rules. As a class we then thought about what rules we would like to see the internet have to ensure that everyone is safe online.

P7 Transition – CDT with Dr Cherry

Over the last 5 weeks P7 have been working with Dr Cherry, a CDT teacher from West Calder high school. On the first week he taught us how to draw straight lines without using a ruler, on the second week we learned how to draw geometric shapes. On the third and final week of Dr Cherry coming to our class we drew  3D cubes also we did some shading with help from a colour scale.  On the fourth week we went up to the high school, when we first arrived we had to pick a template of a spatula either a cat or fish, we had aprons waiting for us on our desks so the first thing we did is put them on. Once we had put our aprons on Dr Cherry went through some safety procedures. Once we had gone through safety procedures Dr Cherry then showed us how to draw a line about half a centimetre far from the template then we drew an x on every part which would be the wood that we were going to cut off. We used a coping saw to cut the excess wood off. Today when we went to W.C.H.S  Dr Cherry had cleaned up our spatula then we had to sand it down to make it soft using 2 different types of sandpaper. We were also very lucky to see some of the big machines in action. Then Dr Cherry put olive oil on our hands and we had to  rub it on our spatula to make sure none of the wood came off in our food. At first it was very sticky and not very nice on our hands. When we washed the oil off the spatula and off our hands they were very soft. He then showed us some models that he was working on and trust us they were amazing.

We all enjoyed this experience very much  and cant wait to go to  High School,  we all hope that you enjoyed reading about or transition up to the high school.

P7 Burns Poems

It is that time of year again when we celebrate the birth of one of our greatest poets, Robert Burns. In Primary 7 we have a choice of 3 poems; To a Louse by Robert Burns, Nabody by Betty Allan and Address to the Deil by Robert Burns. As both Robert Burns poems are quite lengthy, the children have the choice to recite an extract from either poem. Our Burns assembly will take place on the 22nd January where 2 selected children will present their poem to the rest of the school. So get your best Scottish accents on and make Robert Burns proud.

Transition: Dazzling Dazzle Camouflage Art – P7 Art

Ms Thompson comes to Mid Calder Primary from West Calder High School every Monday and Thursday to work with all the Primary 7’s. This is part of our transition to High School and to make it easier to experience what it might be like when we go up to High School next August.

In P7, we have been learning how to draw Dazzle Camouflaged Spitfires. The Dazzle technique was used in World War 1 and 2. They put it on ships to confuse the enemy of what speed the ship was going, what side was the front and which was the back and what side the ship was from. (The Germans or the Britains)

L.I: We are learning to draw spitfires and camouflage them using the Dazzle technique.

S.C: We will be able to successfully complete our Dazzle Camouflage Spitfires and make them into models out of clay.

The skills we need to use are: concentration, listening, sketching, respect (to Ms Thompson) and a steady hand.

Firstly, Ms Thompson explained what Dazzle camouflage is, then we got all of our necessary equipment (A pencil, tracing paper and a picture of a spitfire) and we traced the picture of our chosen spitfire. Then we drew a grid on a fresh piece of paper and our tracing paper, we then transferred our tracing to the other piece of paper. We drew in all of the details and then we were on to drawing our design. We then got a piece of paper and drew our Dazzle pattern in black pen; it included a lot of different and unique pretty patterns. Next we had to block our design to ensure we could camouflage it correctly. Finally we had to transfer our design on to our spitfire drawing.

We know that our next step is to start modelling the clay into the spitfire shape. The clay has ARRIVED!
