Children in Need

Since Children in Need is approaching on 17th November, P3 have been working hard to think of great ideas to support this amazing charity.

We decided that our assembly on the 10th November would be a great opportunity to launch our fundraising.  We will hold a bake sale in the Early Years area after our assembly at break time, where pupils can donate money by buying their snack from us.

During the week of 13th-17th November P3 will be selling Children in Need merchandise.  Pudsey and Blush glow in the dark headbands will be sold for £2.50 each, wristbands for £1.00 and glittery Pudsey and Blush badges for £1 each.

There will also be competitions for children to design a brand new coin and to guess Pudsey’s birthday.  Entries for each competition will be 50p with prizes to be won.

Finally, if anyone still has any round pounds they wish to donate, please bring them into school as Children in Need will still accept these.

Letters detailing this information will be sent out on Monday.

We are really looking forward to “doing our thing” to help!  🙂

P1 Assembly week update

First, Miss Brown and Mrs Robertson would like to say that we are really proud of every person in primary 1.  You all did fantastic at performing your first assembly and all looked great.  🙂

This week we have been learning new sounds, e and f.  We have been learning to blend all our sounds, for example, men, fan and pet.  Also we have been practising our sight words, the, a, The and is.  A new task the whole of this week was our vibrant vocabulary.  This week it involved the book ‘Pumpkin Soup’ which involved different activities all week to learn 5 vibrant vocabulary.  These were scoffed, sobbed, plodded, rumpus and shrieked.  Mrs Robertson focused on answering the 5 w questions (who, where, when, why,  what) about our story ‘Pumpkin Soup’. She showed us a video with a song to help us to remember what each of the questions meant. We are getting better at thinking about the key points in the story to help us to answer the 5 ws.

In maths we have been introduced to a new strategy, Numicon.  We got to experiment with them and learnt what each Numicon piece represents.

We were trying to order numbers and using the names of numbers too.

We also cut out some spooky skeletons of different sizes. We enjoyed this as we read the story “Funny Bones” that has two skeletons (one big and one small). We glued the skeletons in size order and used cubes to measure them. Using chalk, we wrote how many cubes long each of our skeletons were.

Most of our wee has been concentrating on our assembly.

We started learning our songs for our upcoming Nativity with P2/1, P2 and the P3s. We are excited to learn our roles in the coming weeks.

Just another reminder that homework has changed to going home on a Tuesday and back in to school for a Monday.

This week’s learning in P4…

This week in maths, P4 have been consolidating rounding to the nearest 10 and 100.  We used the ‘high 5!’ rule to help us – when rounding to the nearest 10 we learned that we have to look at units digit and apply this rule and when rounding to the nearest 100 we learned that we have to look at the tens digit and apply this rule.  Some of us were able to extend our understanding to work out how to round to the nearest 1000 – well done, P4!

In literacy, we continued to learn about adverbs.  We enjoyed using our acting skills to mime carrying out everyday tasks in a certain manner – for example walking the dog miserably.  We continued to work on making our sentences more interesting by using adverbs to give more information about the verb.  In writing, we moved from working on describing our setting to developing our character.  We enjoyed making up some very interesting characters for our Hallowe’en stories!  This week we have all set up our own free writing jotters.  These will give us the opportunity to write for enjoyment – using any genre we choose.  So far, we have chosen a variety of styles to write in – including both fiction and non-fiction.  Some of us have been lucky enough to work in the ‘Writers’ Hub’ in our open area – we really enjoyed this.

In topic, we have really enjoyed developing our knowledge and understanding of the world.  We worked hard to learn the seven continents and the five major oceans of the world – and most of us can now locate these on a world map.  We have been researching facts about continents and have been using these to create our own books.  We know where the equator and the poles are found – and can explain why the Antarctic is a continent and the Arctic isn’t (we also know which one has polar bears and which one has penguins!)  As a reward for working hard, Passepartout has given us our own passport!  We completed the personal details section and signed these.  We have now moved on to learning about different countries – our first country was Great Britain.  Why don’t you ask us what we found out?

In art, we learned how to create tints of a colour by adding white and shades by adding black.  We created a lovely moonlit background and used our cutting skills to add a silhouette on top.  They look very effective.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend – remember to keep safe!!
