Welcome back to our blog. This week in P7 we raised lots of money for Lepra by doing a sponsored workout. We also had a very exciting day finding out about careers in Science and Engineering, and completing lots of STEM challenges at Dynamic earth. We found out lots about ‘Life on Earth’ by watching fantastic 3D movies. In Literacy we completed our Titanic newspapers and in Maths we completed an assessment on ‘Integers’ we also completed a challenge on 2D shape. We moved on with our Titanic topic and investigated why the Titanic hit the iceberg and thought about who was to blame.
Well done to Lucas who came 3rd in the West Lothian Cross Country Interschools competition. A fantastic achievement!
This week in P2 we have been very busy! We have been learning:
In Maths, we have been learning all about subtraction, building on what we learned in P1 and now we can subtract numbers from 20!
In Literacy, we have been working on the ‘oo/ew’ sound, we did some activities to help us with this.
In our writing this week, we wrote a story all about midnight in the toy shop. Miss McCormack was really impressed with all of the describing words we used.
In topic, we have spent this week doing our class talks, we all learned a lot about each other’s favourite toys. Miss McCormack was very impressed!
We also completed our sponsored LEPRA workout. We had great fun- thank you to everyone who sponsored us!
Today, we spent some time learning all about how to make apple juice. We had a go at putting the apples into the press and then we turned a handle to crush the apples and squeeze out the juice. We all really enjoyed it and thought the juice was better than what we buy in the shops!
This week we continued to harvest our apples (and pears) with P2, P3 and a group from P6 – we had such a bumper harvest that every child in the school has been given either an apple or a pear grown at St Joseph’s, plus we have lots of apples for our apple day next Friday.
And P7 threshed the wheat they had grown and harvested this week – the teaching assistants all very pleased it’s now disappeared from the hall windowsills and thanks to them for rescuing it during the storm when water was leaking in! I think the pupils enjoyed bashing it about in pillowcases to separate the grains from the stalks – bundle of straw going begging for anyone with a rabbit or other animal which could use it! Big thanks again to farmer Ian from Tranent who replaced the wheat we lost to disease and to the Royal Highland Education Trust for organising that and bringing the wheat to the school.
Primary 1 have been celebrating European Day of Languages this week. We have been teaching each other to say hello and goodbye in French and Polish. We designed a map of our playground for our Beebot map. We interviewed Tracey and Claire our dinner ladies about their role at St. Joseph’s and came up with some super questions! We have been using our sound and letter knowledge to word build using our magnetic boards.
We’ve had a busy few weeks in the school garden – parent volunteers harvested all the plums on our trees and all the children in the school received a couple each – a bumper harvest!
Our harvesting of apples continues – we are holding an apple day on October 5 when we will (hopefully if we can figure out how it works!) be using an apple press borrowed from Transition Linlithgow to make apple juice for the children to try. This week children from P1 helped to harvest apples – joined by some of their buddies from P7 on a detour from their smile mile.
And the P7s who have been creating a physic garden helped to plant a liquorice plant. This was one of the plants they researched and suggested for the garden. Unfortunately liquorice root only becomes ready to eat after five years and the oldest plant we could get was a two-year-old one – so very kindly Brandy Carr Nurseries in Yorkshire sent us some fresh roots for the children to try. Liquorice root is botanically sweeter than sugar and the nursery reckons their root tastes “out of this world” – although only one of our P7s agreed!
Pics attached of P1s harvesting apples – pic of the liquorice plant and children trying the root to come in separate emai
In Maths, we have been working on adding several numbers within the same sum. We know to look for our number bonds to 10 first to help us and then we add the remaining number.
In Literacy we have been learning all about the ‘oa’ ‘ow’ sound. We have been doing lots of activities to help us practice this. In grammar we are beginning to learn when and how to learn to use connectives properly.
This week we wrote a story all about the characters from Toy Story and an adventure that they went on. We also met Miss McCormack’s invisible friend who helps us to be super writers. We practiced Kung Fu punctuation and had a handwriting disco.
We were also practicing words from our reading books, to help us with our fluency and accuracy (keep this up at home!)
In our topic this week, we have been comparing toys from today with toys from the past. We chose our favourite toy and compared them to our parents’ favourite toys. We were trying to work out what was the same and what was different about them.
We also got to go outside this week and pick some apples and pears from the trees in the playground. We enjoyed it a lot and also got to take some yummy fruit home with us.
Hi everyone, welcome back to P7. This week in Maths we investigated negative numbers. We looked at negative temperatures on thermometers, and, negative numbers in our bank balances, which would mean we were overdrawn (and in the red! ). In Topic we found out about what happened when the Titanic hit the iceberg and why so many people lost their lives. In Literacy we talked about the features of newspapers and became journalists reporting on the events that unfolded when the ‘Unsinkable Ship Sinks’ . In Art we completed our 3D perspective drawings of the Titanic. In ICT we found out how to create a Titanic watermark. We carried out research on the survivors of the tragedy and created tables with that information. We are really developing out ICT skills!
This week we have been researching about how life was different during the medieval period. We have been discussing sports, food, medicine, houses, entertainment, weapons and of course torture!!! We decided upon which area we wanted to focus our research on and used computers and books to locate relevant information. With the information that we gathered we created a large information page ensuring that we used all of the features that we had been introduced to.
We also spent time learning about William Wallace and how he rose to power only to meet a very gruesome end. We found out how tall he was and how long his sword was. Mr Reed only came up to his shoulder!
Our maths this week gave us the opportunity to improve our ability to add and subtract using the chimney method. We all impressed Mr Reed with our ability to set out our work and successfully answer the various questions he had set.
Mr Reed set us all a challenge to copy down a paragraph in our best handwriting; this is now up on the wall for us to improve on next month when we repeat the challenge.
It has been a great week and one that will be hard to beat.
Welcome back to P7, this has been a short week but we’ve been busy… We’ve had great fun creating 3D perspective pencil drawings of the Titanic. We’ve also used our engineering skills to start working on 3D models . We used design skills to create 3D cabins. In Maths we revised 2D shapes and worked on multiplication of 4 and 5 digit numbers by multiples of 10,100 and 1,000. In Literacy we completed our Fact Files on the crew and passengers of the Titanic. We had our first shiny Friday. Some of us helped younger pupils develop their coding skills.
