The adventures of Primary 6

Over the past two weeks Primary 6 have been even busier than usual; we have been away from the school to play golf, we have had visits from the NSPCC and Show Racism the Red Card  as well having our flu vaccinations

Last week we had two visitors form the NSPCC, they came to talk to our class about keeping ourselves safe. We talked about lots of different areas and found the videos very informative. It is always good to be reminded about what it means to keep ourselves safe at all times.

We also had a visit from Chris; he works for an organisation called Show Racism the Red Card. Even through it sounds like it should just be about footballers it actually covered lots about racism and how it must be stopped from happening. Some of the conversations we had in our class were very challenging and made us think about things in a different way.

We had our second visit to Kingsfield Golf Club where we continued to practise our golf. We played a great game of noughts and crosses which forced us to hit the ball with even more accuracy. It is clear that in Primary 6 we have some great golfers.

Last Friday we had a great time during our outdoor learning as Mr Reed set us the challenge to build dens using what we could find outside. The den must be big enough for at least one of us to get inside and we also had to make our dens even more interesting by being able to share with the other groups all of the features that we had included. It was great fun and we enjoyed using our imagination to make our dens even more exciting.

We are continuing to learn about Andy Goldsworthy and learn more about his style of artwork. We tried to make our own version of one of his pieces of art which was great fun even though it took a long time to complete. Our work is now displayed outside of the classroom for everyone to see. This week we learnt about how he uses nature in many of his sculptures. Mr Reed then asked us to collect 3 sticks of similar size and then showed us how to make triangles tying them together in a particular way. We then began tying the triangles together and slowly, very slowly the sculpture began to take shape. We haven’t finished this yet so can’t share the finished sculpture with you yet.

Four of us went up to Donaldson School to work with some of the pupils there. It was really interesting to go to an alternative school and meet children and teachers and join in their learning. Perhaps we will be teachers in the future. Everyone will get the chance to go to Donaldson over the next few weeks.

I wonder what next week has in store for us!

Primary 6

Week beginning 4th of November 2019

This week in Primary 1 we have been learning all about Firework safety.  We have been creating firework pictures using playdough and loose parts.  In topic we have been designing pictures of toys, working collaboratively to build toys using building blocks, learning all about the world of work through setting up our own toy shop and investigating forces by playing with the cars and ramps. We are continuing to develop our roles in the nativity and have even tried on our costumes, we look great!

Week beginning 4th November 2019

Hi All,

This week in P5 we discussed Fireworks and the safety rules we should follow. We had a visit from the NSPCC and found out how we should ‘Speak out to Stay Safe’. In topic we carried out research on Margaret Maid of Norway. In Literacy we investigated the features of a Recount text and wrote our own newspaper recount on the death of Margaret Maid of Norway. Then we thought about what would happen next? ‘Who Would be King?  In Art we completed our crowns and started our ‘Who Would be King/Queen?’ pictures. Next week we are going to find out how we can blend watercolours to create different tones in our pictures. In Maths we looked at the multiplication strategies we could use to multiply a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number and a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number and how we would use these strategies in real life. In French we used post-its to identify parts of our body. Phew..finally we learned new skills at Rugby!

Week beginning 28th of October 2019

Primary 1 have had a great start to the Christmas term.  We have started our nativity and are very excited to perform it to the St Joseph’s community in December.  We are continuing to learn our sounds and are getting more confident segmenting and blending to read and write three letter words.  We have also been introduced to common words and are reading them in a sentence.  We used different materials to design a broomstick for the witch from ‘Room on a Broom’.  We made up a Witches potion using our knowledge of sounds. We looked amazing on Halloween when we dressed up! We had a reward afternoon which was lots of fun!

Happy Halloween

Hi everyone, welcome back to our P5 blog. This week we have enjoyed many spooky activities in our classroom. We investigated lots of scary adjectives, similes, metaphors and personification and then used them to create a spooky setting for our ‘Haunted House’ Story. We looked at symmetry in Maths and used it to help us completed some  Halloween pictures. In Art we found our how to blend different shades of paint to create a ‘Spooky sky and Haunted House’ picture. We started our new ‘Wallace and Bruce’ topic and found out about the events leading up to the Scottish Wars of Independence. We thought about the role of Kings and Queens and why they were important in 13th century Scotland. We created our own timelines and a family tree for Robert the Bruce. We enjoyed dressing up for Halloween!

Here are some pictures of our week.

What a wonderful reward

Today has been amazing, we have had lots of fun dressed in our Halloween costumes. Even our work today focussed on Halloween as Mr Reed set us some really tricky maths which had a spooky theme.

We had our Halloween procession in the hall which gave us the opportunity to see all the different costumes worn by the children and even the teachers had joined in and were in their costumes. We ended our day with our reward afternoon so we were treated to lots of activities put together by the Primary 7’s and all the support staff.

We are looking forward to our Mass tomorrow and have been preparing ourselves, learning our words and creating some lovely work as our work of the hands. We hope as many parents and carers are able to join with us tomorrow at 11:45am.

End of Term

It has been a wonderful term in Primary 6, so many great learning opportunities have been embraced by everyone. We have ended the term reflecting on our topic and realising just how much we have learnt about myths from around the world.

It was lovely to meet with so many parents this week and share with you some of the work that the children have been doing in class.

Today our Free Writing Ambassadors were visited by some of Primary 2 to support them and encourage them to embrace Free Writing in the same way as we in Primary 6 have.

Have a wonderful break and enjoy some family time with your wonderful children.

Week beginning 30th of September 2019

It’s been another busy week in Primary 1.  We have been continuing to learn our new sounds ‘d’ and ‘o’ and have been segmenting and blending to build three letter words.  We have been developing syllable blending skills with Mrs Aitken.  In maths we have been learning about the number 5.  We have been using the rekenreks and numicon to develop our understanding and learning number rhymes to help with our number formation.  We have been introduced to ‘Sid’ a cheeky monkey and ‘Shanarri’ a friendly spider to learn about how we can keep ourselves safe through stories of their adventures in the ‘Wellbeing Wood’.

Is it too early for Christmas?

This week has been very eventful, throughout the week we have had a maths focus and have been demonstrating our understanding of number in many different ways. We also took our maths outside and created balanced equations using sticks, leaves,. Stones and even tennis balls to create challenges for our friends to answer.

We found out what happened to Medusa through the learning of the story, we then recreated the story using drama. This was great fun and a brilliant way to ensure we all knew the story well.

We reflected on our Robinson Crusoe work from last year and learnt ways of turning salt water into drinking water by boiling salt water then catching the steam in a beaker. What we didn’t expect to find was all the salt left behind in the pan after the water had been evaporated.

Christmas came early this week as we planned and created our designs for Christmas cards, wrapping paper and gifts. We have all brought our work home to share with you and hopefully you will choose something that could be used as gifts. We do have to bring in the slip next week if we do want to order any items.

Primary 6

Fabulous Filtration

This week has been very hands on across all areas of the curriculum; we have enjoyed some topic work outside where we are creating our own marvellous mazes similar to the one Theseus navigated his way around when killing the Minotaur. We used all sorts to create numerous pathways which Mr Reed had to try and find his way out. Our learning this week took us to an even more terrifying creature known as Medusa, We found out how she became such a famous mythological creature. Mr Reed has assured us that next week she will meet a gruesome end.

We were thrilled when Mr Reed told us that during our Science lesson we would be making a mess!! He was not kidding, we were given the chance to turn tap water into the dirtiest water we could using mud, leaves, stones, grass and twigs. The transformation was impressive having started with tap water it now looked like the muddiest puddle ever.

We then were given various objects which we could use to make a water filter, this was great fun and in our groups we made our decisions based on what we knew about filters. With our filters made Mr Reed pored a certain amount of the muddy water into the filter and allowed the water to pass through our chosen materials. It is fair to say some filters were better than others but given the opportunity to repeat the task we were all able to say what we would do differently given the chance.

Tomorrow is Crazy Hair day so we are all wondering what Mr Reed will do as he has an obvious disadvantage.
