Caterpillars & Butterflies

Our teacher student introduced the caterpillars to the children by reading them the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We have two lots of caterpillars in the  nursery one for the am session and one for the pm session. The children have been learning about the life cycle of the butterfly and we have some lovely decorated butterflies for our display. We look forward to releasing out butterflies soon!

Sowing Vegetables

The children have been busy sowing vegetables. They have been helping to prepare the soil by weeding and raking. We have planted carrots, beetroot, lettuce and spring onions. Once harvested they will make a delicious snack in the nursery!! The children also helped to make a Mrs Scarecrow for our garden by sawing the branches from the christmas tree used in the nursery at christmas time! Doesn’t she look lovely and scary!!!! We have also planted some lovely smelling herbs such as mint, thyme and sage into our herb garden and heathers in the rockery! Our garden is looking good!

Water Filtering

As part of our Eco activities we have been learning about the cycle of water. The children were told where water is collected in resevoirs and its journey to the taps in our houses!! At group time we carried out a test to ‘clean’ dirty rain water by passing it through a filter that the children helped to make! This was very interesting and initiated at lot of good discussions.

Potato Planting

The children welcomed Alastair’s dad, Mr McNee, to nursery recently. Mr McNee is our local farmer and is helping us to look after the potatoes he planted with the children. This is a competition which is run by the Royal Highland Education Trust in conjunction with the Clydesdale Bank. Schools and nurseries sign up to the competition and in June send in the necessary information to find out who has harvested the most potatoes. This is a great learning experience for the children as they learn the importance of  looking after plants and get to see first hand the process involved in growing potatoes.  Mr McNee comes along to the nursery every so often to talk to the children about what stage the plant is at and give advice on how to look after the plants.  We’re looking forward to harvesting a great crop of potatoes to have for snack!!

Parents Help with Big Dig Day!

A group of parents gave up their Saturday morning recently to help dig in our nursery garden. A lot of hard work was done with tyres being dug in to form planting areas; the rocky dug over and cleared out; planters dug in to the ground and a bird table erected! It was a very wet muddy day but all the parents worked really hard and our garden is now looking so much better!! We all finished off our successful dig with bacon rolls and a hot drink!! Well done to all who helped,  big ‘Thank You’!

Eco Helpers Launched

We have now got our Eco helpers all set to carry out their important roles in the nursery. Eco helpers are a group of children picked each week and have specific tasks to makes sure e.g. all taps are turned off; paper towels are not getting wasted and litter is picked up in the nursery gardens. They have special bands and badges to wear so they are easily identified as our Eco helpers!!
