As part of our Eco activities we have been learning about the cycle of water. The children were told where water is collected in resevoirs and its journey to the taps in our houses!! At group time we carried out a test to ‘clean’ dirty rain water by passing it through a filter that the children helped to make! This was very interesting and initiated at lot of good discussions.

ParkSmart Campaign
As part of this campaign the children have been learning about the importance of parking safely near the school and indeed encouraged to walk to nursery. At group time we have been talking about being safe when going in the car and how to cross the road safely – always hold hands with an adult; stop, look, listen and think before crossing the road. Whenever we are out walks with the children they are made aware of good road safety and important signs. Earlier in the session the police visited and reinforced this message. They also made the children aware of not talking to strangers and what to do should they get lost at the shops. The children have all been learning their address! The police brought along their van and allowed the children to have a look inside it!

Dental Visit
Lorraine, our Dental Support Worker, came to nursery recently to talk to the children about oral hygiene. She read the children a story and talked to them about food and drink that is good for their teeth and those that are not. The children then got the chance to clean the teeth of the special visitor Lorraine had brought along with her.
Potato Planting
The children welcomed Alastair’s dad, Mr McNee, to nursery recently. Mr McNee is our local farmer and is helping us to look after the potatoes he planted with the children. This is a competition which is run by the Royal Highland Education Trust in conjunction with the Clydesdale Bank. Schools and nurseries sign up to the competition and in June send in the necessary information to find out who has harvested the most potatoes. This is a great learning experience for the children as they learn the importance of looking after plants and get to see first hand the process involved in growing potatoes. Mr McNee comes along to the nursery every so often to talk to the children about what stage the plant is at and give advice on how to look after the plants. We’re looking forward to harvesting a great crop of potatoes to have for snack!!
Gala Day Preparations
The nursery recognises the importance of the Gala Day to the local community and has participated in the procession since it opened in 1979!!! Every year parents are invited to form a nursery Gala Committee. They are responsible for the final decision and design of the outfits that the nursery participants will wear. The Committee have to source and work out all that is needed to make the outifts. They then have to organise making up a pack for everyone who is taking part. They often involve the wider parent body by having an evening in the nursery. The jobs are wide ranging and can include making wigs, cutting material and even making cups of tea to keep everyone going!!! This years’ gala preparations and well under way with the theme decided upon and items being sourced. This is a special year for Armadale Gala Day as they celebrate 100 years of processions! We are all looking forward to this special celebration!
