New Guidelines Norovirus Diarrhoea and Vomiting Illness in Schools

NOROVIRUS ADVICE LETTER WINTER 2017-2018

In recent years we have seen a large number of Norovirus outbreaks in schools and nurseries during the winter months and these have caused service disruption, cancellation of activities like nativity plays and trips, staff shortages, school closures and many pupils being absent from class. Since the summer holidays in 2017 we have seen 5 schools affected.

Norovirus is very infectious and high numbers of children and staff can be affected at once. The symptoms of norovirus include sudden onset of nausea followed by projectile vomiting and/or diarrhoea and usually last 12 to 60 hours. A person can become infected as a result of contact with an infectious case, contact with a surface contaminated with the virus or ingesting contaminated food or drink.

We would like to remind you of the importance of being prepared and vigilant for norovirus outbreaks as prompt action prevents spread of the virus and reduces the number of people becoming ill. You may wish to ensure that you have an outbreak plan in place and practise how you would deal with an outbreak.

We would also like to remind all parents/carers that it is West Lothian Council policy that children should not attend school for a minimum of 48 hours from their last sickness or diarrhoea. All schools have been asked to be vigilant about this policy.

Photography/Videoing in School

As stated in our September newsletter we would like to remind all parents/carers that you are not permitted to take photos or videos either before, during or after our performances.

This is following advice from Police Scotland and relates to all performances and school events.

Use of Class Dojo

After having various discussions both around the school and with the authority about class dojo and, as a result of these discussions, have decided that as from January we will no longer be using Class Dojo in this school. This is for the following reasons:

  • It takes away from the house points if teachers are rewarding with dojo points
  • We want the blog to be the place that learning / information is shared
  • We do not know how this company is using this data / who they are selling it too

Going forward we will be using the school house points system to reward in the same categories as we have used dojo.

Those who wish to contact the class teacher can contact the school office via email or telephone.

Parents/Carers are encouraged to comment on their child’s learning on the blog.

Thank You

Kathryn French

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING – Thank you!

Thank you to all parents/carers, families and children who supported our fund raising effort for Macmillan Cancer Relief on Friday.  We raised a total of £340.15 which will be donated on behalf of the school.

Please see below information from West Lothian Council regarding Macmillan Cancer Support (information also attached here) Macmillan West Lothian.

West Lothian Council is working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to establish a network of cancer information and support drop in services across West Lothian. We currently offer drop in sessions in Bathgate Partnership Centre, Strathbrock Partnership Centre and Carmondean Connected and Fauldhouse Partnership Centre will shortly open our 5th outreach service, located within the new Blackburn Partnership Centre. We offer anyone affected by cancer a listening ear in a comfortable environment where visitors can discuss issues of concern to them; access a comprehensive information resource including books and leaflets, access to the internet and details of local groups and services. We also work in partnership with Cancer Support Scotland to offer skilled counselling and complementary therapies as well as access to benefits advice from the local Macmillan Benefits Team.

Winter Ready West Lothian 2016

Winter Ready West Lothian 2016/17

West Lothian Council has launched its public information campaign Winter Ready West Lothian 2016/17.

The campaign highlights the council’s preparations for possible severe weather and encourages local people to prepare now. Severe winter weather can include snow, frost and low temperatures, high winds and flooding.

More information is available at www.westlothian.gov.uk/winter

As with previous years the council has:

  • Maintained salt stocks.
  • Set up contracts with local suppliers for severe weather support.
  • Provided an email alert service so that regular information can be sent direct to your inbox.
  • Delivered refresher training to staff on all severe weather equipment.
  • Published a Winter Ready supplement in the winter issue of Bulletin, the council newspaper. This is also available online at westlothian.gov.uk/bulletin

The council is also asking residents and local businesses to help:

  • Park sensibly – abandoned vehicles can cause serious issues.
  • Share information with friends and neighbours, and spare a moment for vulnerable neighbours.
  • Stay informed. Sign up for the email alert on the council’s website at westlothian.gov.uk/email, like the council Facebook page at www.facebook.com/westlothiancouncil or follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/lovewestlothian for updates.
  • If you are able, clear the path and pavement in front of your home.
  • Prepare your car and home ahead of the winter.
  • Keep the winter issue of Bulletin handy.
  • Parents and carers should also ensure that their child’s school has up to date contact information.
  • Should severe weather hit, Groupcall is the way that schools will inform parents and carers about closures.
