Winter Adventures

January 15, 2016 by User deactivated | 1 Comment

This week we have taken a wander in the cold to check out some of the wonderful outdoor resources that we have on our doorstep! While we went on our winter wander we practiced assessing risks on the ground, at eye level and tree level.

We will be heading outside as much as possible on a Friday so please remember to bring your warm and waterproof gear!

Once we got back we were looking at the thick ice that had formed on the top of our sandpit! We used the ice to have a science challenge. Our challenge was to stop the ice from melting! We selected our own materials and worked in groups to test different options. We did such an amazing job that the ice only melted once all the children had gone home! Isla, Lleyton, Isa, Katie and Elle’s group were the overall winners. They insulated their ice with lots and lots of newspaper.

What a fun and frosty day!

P1S Maths Games

We played this game today to help us learn about number words to ten.

We also played ‘Fruit Splat Numbers to Words’ but the link will not save on the blog.

To help us with these games we used  our number line to help us.  Miss Stebbing will post a picture of this soon!

Festive Fun at SJO

The boys and girls of St John Ogilvie enjoyed a festive treat this week funded by the PFA, the pantomime ‘Peter Pan’. We enjoyed singing and clapping along with the ever so talented actors from M&M Theatrical Productions. Here are some of the pictures taken below along with the yummy Christmas dinner we have had lately too. A big thank you to all the staff involved in the preparation and serving of the food. It was delicious!

Nativity Cast 2015

Here is the very talented cast of ‘Not Such a Silent Night’. We hope you enjoy our production of the greatest story ever told- the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The boys and girls have worked very hard to remember all of the songs, actions, readings and stage directions.

Mental Maths Strategies – See 9 Think 10

Billie and Isla have made a great Vittle explaining in their own words one of our favourite mental math strategies. We use see 9 think 10 whenever we need to add or subtract a number that is close to a ten. We use our imagination to pretend we are working with a ten (which is easy!) then we adjust how ever many we added or subtracted to get to ten at the end!

We are all really working hard on developing our ability to explain our thinking in maths to others and I think the girls have done a brilliant job!

Graphic Designers at Work!

Primary 5 have been learning about using persuasion to sell our products. We looked at lots of different logos and discussed what makes them so recognisable and effective. We have been practicing our sketching and design skills to brainstorm our ideas for our own logos. We will vote on the best one for each group and you will be seeing them soon on our fantastic Enterprise products!

Money, Money, Money!

To prepare for our Enterprise Showcase we have been working on adding money and working out change. Primary 5 have done a great job of choosing (pretend) presents for friends and family in catalogs within a budget and finding their change! Great job P5!
