Skills for Learning, Life and Work

The pupils from P4-7 all took part in an exciting careers morning where they were able to ask a range of parents about their careers.   Pupils prepared questions in advance based on the careers they were most interested in.  The parents involved complemented our children on the quality of their questioning and their good manners.5 october 2015 1199 5 october 2015 1202 5 october 2015 1211 5 october 2015 1217 5 october 2015 1219 5 october 2015 1224 5 october 2015 1238 5 october 2015 1248 5 october 2015 1267 5 october 2015 1271 5 october 2015 1274

Our Learning in P1S (w/b 27th October 2015)

This week we have been learning about the sounds ‘qu’ and ‘x’.  We are very excited as we now only have 2 sounds to learn to fill the whole alphabet sheet on our magnetic boards.  We have been working hard to sound out and glue letters to make words and Miss Stebbing is very proud of us.  We have also been finding lots of common words in our reading books and we have been practising writing the common words on our whiteboards.  We have been listening to the story Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson; we listened to it in 3 different ways and discussed our favourite.  Remember to ask us about our learning!  We also wrote our own Room on the Broom stories and got to have our photos taken on a broom.  We thought this was very funny.

In maths we have been applying our sorting skills to help the Elephants get ready for Elmer Day.  We had to sort out cutlery or straws and then explain what we did to the other boys and girls.  We also used our counting skills to put the correct number of Halloween confetti shapes in different cauldrons.  We had to use a lot of glue to make sure they stuck to the paper!

We have been learning about what makes a good friend and we made some friendship soup.  We all got a chance to put something in the pot and mix it up.  Miss Stebbing was very impressed with our answers and now she wants to see us being good friends in the classroom and the playground.

On Friday we had our Joining the Learning Day to celebrate Halloween.  We had lots of fun visiting the different classes, meeting all the staff in the infant department and working with other pupils from P2 and P3.

Next week we will be starting our new topic about Robots.  Miss Stebbing is looking forward to seeing all our Robot models on Monday!

Boo! It’s Halloween!

Primary 5 have been inspired by Halloween and have creating some spooky passages using some creepy sentence starters. Here are some highlights!

I was absolutely delighted with the quality of writing produced! The children have really thought about VCOP and have created some very frightening stories. Luckily Ethan has some advice if you feel scared at Halloween…

Primary 5 First Term Highlights

In Science we have been learning about microorganisms. We carried out an investigation to find out whether Microorganisms grow better in a clean or unclean environment. We rubbed white bread with our hands after lunch, then we washed our hands and repeated on a different slice of bread. These are our results. Yuck!

Making Canopic Jars

We have been making paper mache canopic jars this week. We learned about how important the canopic jars were in the mummification process. The canopic jars were decorated with the heads of the four sons of Horus.

Each canopic jar guarded a different organ. Imsety had a human head, protected the liver, Qebehsenuf had the head of a falcon and guarded the intestines, Hapy had a baboon head protected the lungs and Duamatef had the head of a jackal, and guarded the stomach.

The four canopic jars were put into a special chest which went into the tomb with the mummy.

The canopic jars have turned out really well! Great work P5S!

Cross Country

Well done to all our primary six pupils who took part in the deans cluster cross country event despite the damp weather.   A special congratulations to Rebecca and Arran who came first and second in their races.  The P6 girls won the team event and will be able to enter a team for the P7 race next year.  Super running everyone!!

A well deserved mention to our P7 girls team who also won the team event in the West Lothian P7 race.

Week Beginning 12.10.15 P1D

Hello P1D Families,

It is lovely to have met you during Parent Consultation Evenings and have the opportunity to share with you how wonderful and clever your children are. Below are some pictures of what we have been getting up to lately in our classroom.

As the season of Autumn continues to unveil itself with beautiful oranges, browns and reds, we decided to take a walk through those leaves and brought some back into class for rubbings to accompany our ‘Thank you God for Autumn’ prayers. We were amazed to watch the shape and detail of the leaves appear before our eyes during the rubbings exercise. How wondrous is God’s creation!

We have been further exploring patterns in class also during Maths with making bunting for Elmer’s party. The children’s colouring skills have improved so much since the start of P1. We have also been learning Time. The children were able to confidently list the different places they have noticed clocks before such as wall clocks, watches, ipads, mobile phones etc and discovered that face clocks have 2 hands of a different length. We made our own face clocks and when we return after the holidays we are going to learn how to read ‘o’clock’! We are very excited about this.

We enjoyed tasting jelly for our ‘j’ sound and watched it wobble! Mrs McEwan wanted to taste some but we told her it was just for the P1s. Sorry Mrs McEwan!

We are getting better at reading and writing our sounds and numbers and enjoyed looking at examples of our super writing in our Learner Journeys that we knew the mums and dad were going to be looking at during Parent Meetings.

P3D Sports for Schools

Primary 3D really enjoyed participating in the sporting activities that were organised as part of the Sponsored Sports for Schools.  They listened intently to Caitlin McClatchey talking about her inspiration and training.

The children worked hard to raise money for sports equipment and Ariana raised a spectacular £104.50 – Well done!

¡Hola! ¿Qué Tal?

Primary 5 has been practicing our Spanish greetings and asking each other how we are. We used Spanish fans to record who we have spoken to. Most of us were ‘estupendo!’ however some of us were only ‘rrrrrregular’ or even ‘fatal’! Oh no!
