Topic 2 – Sun, Moon and Stars

We have started our new topic Sun, Moon and Stars. The children are very excited about it and are keen to learn more about this topic. Ross was so excited that he and his dad got to work straight away and built an amazing space shuttle rocket for our class.

Ross was able to explain exactly how the rocket had been made. The children and I thought it was brilliant. The children asked lots of quality questions about it and Ross answered with real enthusiasm and passion. We are very thankful to Ross and his dad for making it and promise to take care of it.

This week our topic began by asking us to explore ‘Day and Night’. We read the story ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy, which we really enjoyed.

It was a funny story about dad not being able to sleep because of all the noises he could hear…ask your child to retell the story to you.

Next week we will be reading ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ ,  so be sure to visit our page again to see all the exciting work will be doing relating to this story.

On Wednesday 14.11.12, we heard the story of The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. It was an amazing story about a little owl called Plop. Although he was an owl, he didn’t like the dark….he wanted to be a day bird. So, his parents sent him on some night time visits to different people to see what they had to say about the dark. By the end of the story, Plop loved the dark and all the adventures and fun that took place at night time. He ended by saying ‘Dark is super’

We heard the story, then we had to work in small groups of 3, to cut, colour and sequence the events from the story in order. It was quite a challenge, but every group worked well together to complete the task and created some wonderful posters.

Here are the groups hard at work. Look at the concentration!

After the task was finished, the children wanted to read the story again. They split into 3 groups with an appointed teacher/reader in each group. The group teachers read the story beautifully.

Well Done to Molly, Freya and Murron

I think my job may be at risk!   ;-0

PHASES OF THE MOON

We have started learning about the phases of the moon. It is very interesting and we have been finding out lots of facts.

Did you know……The Moon phases are produced by the alignment of the Moon and the Sun in the sky?

The revolution of the Moon around the Earth makes the Moon appear as if it is changing shape in the sky. From Earth we see the Moon grow from a thin crescent to a full disk (or full moon) and then shrink back to a thin crescent again before vanishing for a few days.

Did You Know ………..The lit part of the Moon always points the way to the Sun?

iconWhat is the phase of the moon?

The changing shape of the bright part of the Moon that we see is called its phase.

iconWhat causes part of the Moon to be lit up?

The moon is illuminated because it reflects the light from the sun. The part of the moon facing the sun is lit up. The part facing away from the sun is in darkness.

iconWhat causes the different phases of the Moon?

The phases of the Moon depend on its position in relation to the Sun and Earth. As the Moon makes its way around the Earth, we see the bright parts of the Moon’s surface at different angles. These are called “phases” of the Moon.

Did you know…….There are eight phases of the moon?

The phases are named after how much of the moon we can see, and whether the amount visible is increasing, or decreasing each day.

Homework Task – Remember to look at the moon EVERY night from the 11th January 2013 and record what you see in your Moon Diary.

We made our own moon phases. We worked with a partner to cut out our moon phases, then we had great fun painting them. We had to dip marbles into black paint, then put them into a tray with our moon phases. This was very messy, but we enjoyed it. Next, we had to work with our partner to move the tray up and down, backwards and forwards  and side to side in order to make a pattern on our moon phases. When they are dry, Mrs Foy is going to laminate them.

Here are some photos of us at work….

Week beginning  28.01.13

We have been very busy this week……

On Monday we had a fabulous show from ‘Generation Science’. They helped us learn more about day and night and also told us interesting facts about the sun, moon and earth.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we made our rockets from the junk we had collected from home (a big thanks to all parents who sent junk in). We loved it, but our class was very messy! When they were dry we painted them. Mrs Foy said they were all fabulous 🙂    What do you think????

On Wednesday and Thursday we made a display for our class by painting the sun, moon and earth. We also made stars using glue and siver glitter.

Check in with us later to see the display when it is on the wall …… 😉
