Meldrum Messages – Friday 30th January 2026

We’ve had a very productive week here at Meldrum PS.  Classes have been busy learning across all areas of the curriculum.  P7 have continued to take part in Spanish lessons with one of the staff from the Modern Language department at DCHS.  P4, P5 and P6 have also joined online lessons in the area of modern languages, taking part in either French or Spanish activities.  P6 are researching all about Europe as they prepare to take part in the West Lothian Council Euroquiz which some of the class members will be involved in.  You can read more about class learning by reading each class’ individual blog posts for this week.

Today we had a fantastic assembly where the winners of our Scots Poetry Competition performed for the whole school and their parents/carers or a family member who were invited to join us.  Congratulations to all of our winners, runners up and to everyone who put themselves forward in the competition.  We loved hearing the different poems today and were proud of our classmates who performed so confidently.

A reminder that we will have our first Achievement Assembly next week.  All submissions to be made using the forms link sent out via email by Wednesday 4th Feb at 5pm.

Next week

Tuesday and Wednesday – Mrs Egan out of school at an event

Thursday – Netball after school club

Friday – Mrs Scobie out of school – Mrs Brown/Mrs Egan in P4; pupil working group morning; Achievement Assembly for pupils

Have a great weekend!  Lynne Egan.

Primary 2 – Friday 30th January 2026

Primary 2 – Friday 30th January 2026

What a busy week in Primary 2. We celebrated our Burns Poetry winners at assembly, well done to everyone who took part. Our outdoor learning day has changed to a Thursday, please ensure all children have appropriate clothing on this day. This week, we enjoyed some maths outside.

Our sound this week was ‘ue’ and we worked hard to segment our words to read and spell. Some of the words that we remembered are fuel, statue, rescue, barbeque and continue.

Great Green: “What went well…”

-Practising our 10 times table outside using natural resources. The children used sticks and grouped these in tens. We used chalk to write the calculation correctly.

-We have been learning about parts of the body. We discussed our similarities and differences, and what privacy means.

-We demonstrated our knowledge when revising o’clock and half past on analogue and digital clocks.

Think Pink: “Even better if…”

-Work on logging on to Sumdog independently.

-Begin to use rulers independently in the classroom. After the February break we will be focusing on measure in our Maths.

Lead Learners:

Our lead learners next week are Lucy and Lam for consistently displaying all of the school values and showing good manners in the classroom and around the school.

Primary 1 – 30th January

This week has been another busy week in Primary 1. We have continued our learning about Scotland and enjoyed more Scottish songs, dances and poems.

We also went outside for outdoor learning and made an obstacle course. It was very cold but fun!

Great Green: “What went well…”

-In Jolly Phonics, we have been working on the sound ‘sh’. We have been reading new words like shop, ship, brush and wash.

-In Maths, we are continuing to learn how to tell the time and this week we were even looking at digital clocks. We recognise these from alarm clocks.

Think Pink: “Even better if…”

-In Maths, we want to learn new skills in measurement.

-In topic, we would like to learn about Scottish foods and famous Scottish people.

Lead Learners:

This weeks lead learners did a great job, well done Thomas and Alice!

Our lead learners next week are Theo and Amelie for showing responsibility in and around the classroom. Myself and other members of staff have noticed the effort and dedication these children have had to ensuring the classroom and area are tidy at the end of different activities. Well done!

P3 – Friday 30th January

Primary 3 are exploring a range of older traditional fairy tales to increase their knowledge of characters, problems and of course happy endings. We have also had our Scottish assembly and I would like to again congratulate Hazel, Addison and Emily.

Great Green

For outdoor learning on Thursday we learned about orienteering and had to follow the map of the school to find the 15 flags as fast as we could. Being focussed and using communication skills were essential for success.

Think Pink

Remember to try the word in your vocabulary jotter before coming to check. As if you get it correct you earn a House Point.

This weeks lead learners are Harris and Jack. Well done!  They have shown good listening skills during story and they have asked and answered some tricky evaluative questions.

Primary 5

Great Green – ‘What went well’

– Using alliteration and including adjectives and action verbs, we wrote poems about British birds. We turned our think pink into great green!!
Neve wrote ‘Three confident, croaking crows.’
Finlay wrote ‘Five dangerous, defying doves.’
Aarjav wrote ‘One ominous, observing owl.’

Think Pink – ‘Even better if’

– Reading each day in class and at home.
– We used our ‘rules for speech marks’ to uplevel our writing.

Our lead learners last week did a great job. Thank you – Finlay and Aarjav

Meldrum Messages – Friday 23rd January 2026

We have had a super week here at Meldrum with lots going on. All of the classes have been very busy preparing their Scots poems and classes have chosen their winners.  I am very much looking forward to hearing all of these poems next week and I think it’s going to be a hard job to choose an overall winner!

P5 enjoyed taking part in a handball festival at DCHS on Thursday and represented our school very well.  P4 performed their assembly for parents/carers this morning and it was a resounding success.  The children and Mrs Scobie worked very hard to pull this together and their hard work paid off today.  Well done P4!

A request that lollipops are not sent into school as snack or part of a lunch.  If a child is bumped while they have a lollipop in their mouth, there could be a choking risk so we would ask that these types of treats are kept for home.  Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Achievement Assembly – we are going to introduce a termly achievement assembly for the children to celebrate wider achievement.  You will be sent a link to a Microsoft form where you can detail any achievements that your child has recently at clubs or activities they take part in.  In line with our Scottish Curriculum for Excellence which aims to develop children to be Responsible Citizens, Effective Contributors, Confident Individuals and Successful Learners, we are also keen to have children who show these traits in their local community recognised too.  As well as submitting information about their achievement, you can also send a photograph to our school email (wlmeldrum-ps@westlothian.org.uk) and we will use these at our achievement assembly (this is for children only and will be held during normal assembly time)  Pictures should be of your child only, any group photographs will not be used.

Next Week

Tuesday – P7 taking part in online lesson with DCHS staff

Wednesday – Mrs Egan to hear Scots poetry finalists

Thursday – Netball after school club

Friday – Scots poetry assembly performances
