Policy Statement

At Drymen Nursery we aim to provide all children a positive environment to support their play and learning.  This policy aims to support children, staff and families in promoting positive relationships.

Our Vision

We believe that children learn best when they are in a caring, secure and stimulating environment.  This environment should respond to each child’s individual needs and should provide something familiar, new and challenging.  This will enable each child to pursue a current interest, therefore reflecting a commitment to the holistic way in which children play and learn.

To support children to reach their full potential we use a process called conflict resolution, adapted from the Highscope approach.  The 6 main steps of this support our children in developing their ability to deal with conflicts on their own.

Six Steps in Conflict Mediation

  1. Approach calmly, helping stop any hurtful actions.
  2. Acknowledge children’s feelings – how are all children involved feeling?
  3. Gather information – what has happened?
  4. Restate the problem – adult to summarise what has happened for all children.
  5. Ask for ideas for solutions and choose one together.
  6. Be prepared to give follow up support if required.

We understand that some children will require support in different ways and our educators will use their knowledge and experience to ensure a differentiated approach is offered when required.

A conflict resolution visual folder is available for all children to access.  This allows all stakeholders to be involved in restorative practice providing children with a prompt to discuss feelings and next steps.

 Conclusion

By adhering to these principles, Drymen Nursery will provide a positive play and learning environment supportive to all stakeholder’s needs and relationships.
