Modern Languages

Our Curriculum

“In secondary schools, there should be opportunities for young people to build on their language learning through their entitlement to language learning in L2 until the end of BGE. Young people are also entitled to an L3 experience within BGE. In the senior phase, young people should be able to study more than one additional language to National Qualification.”

Modern Languages: Principles and practice (Education Scotland, 2009)

At Balfron High School, we aim to meet all pupils’ entitlement to learning a first Modern Language (L2) throughout the Broad General Education, building on the language skills they have developed in primary school.  All pupils therefore learn French from S1-S3. In S3, we offer an experience of learning about the language and culture of both Spain and Germany.

Students are then able to choose to continue their language studies in the Senior Phase with the possibility of the following progression through National Qualifications:

S4

National 4/5

S5

National 4/5 Higher
S6 National 4/5 Higher

Advanced Higher
