Aims
Learners in Balfron High School follow a course based on the experiences and outcomes laid out within the Curriculum for Excellence.
It is designed to build on the work in S1 Science and to provide a stimulating and challenging basis for further study.
In S2 learners first tackle the Light topic. Looking at the nature and properties of light, the eye, eye defects and the visual perception of colour.
This is followed by an introduction to electricity. Including some circuit work, measuring voltage, current and resistance and some applications of electricity and electromagnetism.
S3 begins with a unit of work on Electronics. Including input devices, simple electronic systems, logic gates, LEDs and problem solving exercises.
Then a practical study of waves and wave properties. Reflection, refraction , the wave equation and an introduction to spectroscopy.
Finally a topic including a study of moving objects. Working on speed, acceleration, speed time graphs, forces and an introduction to road safety.
Assessment
Various methods of assessment are used including written tests, practical assessment and research tasks.
Pupils will be involved in peer and self assessment exercises.
Progression
All learners will move on to study Physics in more depth in S4 at National 4 or National 5 level.
