Term 4 2026
As part of their ‘Food & Growing’ topic this term, P123 have had some very special visitors! They have been lucky enough to have some parents coming in to tell them all about their jobs and how these contribute to food production.
John Anderson
Mia’s dad, John, came in to tell us all about his job as a fisherman. We learned all about what a Shetland fisherman does, and we had so many questions to ask John! He brought us in some fish and an example of the nets that they use. We learned about sustainable fishing and that the nets have to be a certain size so it doesn’t catch the smaller fish. John brough a monkfish, a catfish, a john dory and a piltock (coal fish) in to show us. We had an amazing time seeing these fish up close and were very grateful to John for taking the time to come and visit us.

Cameron Cowie
Arran’s dad, Cameron, came in to visit and tell us all about his job as a salmon farmer. We loved Cameron’s visit because he had prepared lots of photos and videos to show us of the salmon farm. We learned about how the smolt (young salmon), are put into the pens and looked after for 2 years, until they are harvested. We saw how they are fed and learned all about the monitoring that is done to make sure that the salmon are happy and thriving. Cameron took a few young salmon in to show us, and we loved seeing these. Again, we are so thankful to Cameron for giving up his time, we loved his visit! Some of us even think we might be salmon farmers when we grow up!
Ross MacDougall
This week, we have had Molly’s dad, Ross, in to visit us. Ross came to tell us all about his job as a mussel farmer. He also had lots of interesting photos to show us, and he brought a mussel in and opened it so that we could see inside. We loved learning all about mussels from Ross…we had no idea how interesting they are! We learned that mussels are a very sustainable food to eat from the sea, and that they’re very good for you. They have iron, zinc and vitamin B12 in them. We were so interested in what Ross had to show us, and we learned all about what happens when the mussels are harvested…and even how to eat them! Some of us would like to try them now! Thank you so much Ross for taking the time to come and share with us. We have learned so much!
We enjoyed writing out words in chalk outside in the sunshine!
