Sound Primary School Curriculum Week – Maths
Our first curriculum week of session 2024/25 starts on 23/09 and will focus on Maths in line with Maths Week Scotland. Curriculum weeks allow the whole school to focus on an aspect of the curriculum and share our learning.
From Nursery to Primary 7, learners will participate in additional numeracy and maths activities that support engagement through outdoor learning, make links to other curricular areas and to the world of work through STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Maths displays in the canteen will share learning from curriculum week. Some classes may also choose to take part in national online challenges such as Times Tables Rock Stars.
Number Notion packs will go home on Monday with all P2-7 learners. The packs include activities and a learning grid to support family learning as well as the consolidation and development of Maths/Numeracy knowledge and skills. Please make sure that your child/children take their Number Notion packs back to school on Friday 27th September. Primary one learners will take home paper copies of Maths/Numeracy Family Learning grids for use at home throughout our curriculum week. Please take the time to engage with your child/children in these activities.
The Maths Week Scotland website includes lots of resources for use at home as well as school – see link below.

In addition to this, professional learning for teachers will focus on Numeracy and Maths. Miss Rebecca Simpson, P6 teacher, is leading a twilight session on the Effective Use of Questioning to support assessment in Numeracy and Mathematics.
Enjoy our curriculum week in line with Maths Week Scotland everyone!
Child Flu Vaccine
Child flu vaccine: help beat flu with a wee scoosh
Given as a nasal (nose) spray, the flu vaccine is quick, easy and painless. All it takes is a wee scoosh up the nose.
Please remember to complete, sign and return your child’s consent form, even if you don’t want your child to get vaccinated.
The vaccine is given once a year. Flu viruses are constantly changing, so a different vaccine has to be made every year to ensure the best protection against flu.

Welcome to Session 2024 2025
Happiness and Inclusion are two of Sound Primary School’s five values and are a key focus for term 1.

Well done to everybody for great performances and showing all our school values throughout the morning.

Sports Day
Wednesday 19th June (Weather Permitting) Clickimin Track
This year we are doing a P1-7 sports day. We are continuing to do the same format for each P1-3 and P4-7, but they will run along side each other. Here is a map of the track with the stations marked on it and the order the classes are moving.
STEM Success
Congratulations to our STEM team who took home two prizes today at the YESC Shetland Regional Celebration of STEM. Our Primary 6 and 7 classes have been working exceedingly hard over the past year, on a variety of STEM projects, developing their Meta-skills along the way.
Today’s team showcased all of the exciting learning that has been happening in their classrooms. They won the STEM challenges section, displaying excellent teamwork, problem solving and communication skills. They also were the runner up Regional Science Club of the Year! Well done!

Jenna Reid Author Visit
Primary 1,2 and 3B were fortunate to have a visit from local Author and Fiddle Player Jenna Reid. She read us her book ‘Telescope, Telescope’ and spoke about her favourite memories of a childhood growing up in Shetland. Pupils really enjoyed her story and liked asking questions about being an author, making a book and her fiddle playing. We even got to tap along a beat as she played for us. This visit is part of our school focus on promoting a passion for reading and our Reading Accreditation Award through the Scottish book trust. We thank Jenna for her time and for her generous donation of 3 books for our nursery and P1-2 pupils.
