Escape – The Story of Jan Baalsrud & The Shetland Bus

At the end of a busy term, P7B have just finished listening to an  incredible album by Shetland fiddling sisters Jenna and Bethany Reid.

Upon reading the true story of the WW2 Norwegian resistance fighter,  the sisters decided to write a suite of music which tells the story very emotively and in such a thought provoking way. On the album, Phil Goodlad, also from Shetland originally, tells the dramatic and chilling story of Jan’s journey, and each piece of music that follows, brings the story alive.

Once we had heard each part of the narration, we focused our listening and completed activities based on what we had heard on each track. In this post are examples of some of the work the class produced as well as mp3 files of all the pieces of music we listened to.

Track 1: Jan’s March

Track 2: Brattholm

Track 3: Escape/Double Cross

Track 4: Firefight

Track 5: Marching

Track 6: Avalanche

Track 7: Marius

Track 8: At the Summit

Track 9: Desolation

Track 10: Kilpisjarvi/Freedom in Sweden

Track 11: Jan’s Return

We also recently had the opportunity for a Q&A session with Jenna via Zoom, and we’re very grateful that she gave up her time to meet with us and answer our array of questions about the music, the story and her fiddling career.

None of us can truly comprehend what Jan went through. One man’s fight to free his country. One man’s spirit to never give up. It’s why no one should every forget the sacrifice of those who took part in the Shetland Bus.

Sports Day Review

We had a very successful afternoon of sports, with some fantastic performances and great results from the pupils. It was wonderful to see everyone taking part with enthusiasm, determination and excellent sportsmanship.

Unfortunately, we ran out of time before completing the mini marathons. Weather and availability permitting, these will be completed over the next couple of days.

Once the mini marathons have taken place, the final results will be calculated and pupils will be informed of the overall winning house.

Thank you to all the pupils for their effort and positive attitude throughout the event. We look forward to announcing the final results soon! 🏅🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🎉

PE Term 4 Weeks 5-12

Weeks 5-8 Skipping

We started by developing our individual performance from a basic skip to trying  different actions with our feet like jumping jacks, ski’s, twists, etc.  We could also try moving the rope differently by doing cross overs and a double rope with one jump.  In our second week we introduced partner work, where we both still had our own ropes but tried to skip in time, and skipping on a bench.  We finished the block with group skipping using the longer ropes.

Week 9-12

This week sees the start of our last 4 week block of the term and the year, which is Rounders.  Here are the first two games we are doing.

– Circle and line – In 2 halves, 1 half stand in a circle and pass the ball around circle.  The other half stand in a corner and 1 at a time run around edge of gym.  See how many passes the circle team can make in the time it takes the other team to all have 1 shot each.

– Passing rounders – 2 teams, 1 fielding and the other batting.  The batters throw the ball out and run once round all the stumps.  The fielders score by throwing the ball as many times as they can before the batter gets home.  The team with the most throws wins.

Term 3 PE

We had a busy term in PE doing Dance, Handball and Badminton.  P7 also had a few extra lessons learning Shetland dances for the P7 Hop with Bell’s Brae.

Here we are doing Handball.

Term 4 Overview

We are finishing the year off with three activities for four weeks each.

1 – Athletics with Determination and Resilience

2-Skipping with Stamina

3- Rounders with Cue Recognition.
