Term 2 PE – Gymnastics

This term, all pupils will be taking part in gymnastics, starting with mat skills and progressing to apparatus work. Gymnastics is a fantastic way for children to develop confidence, coordination, and strength while working at their own level.

Mat Skills Focus:

  • Balances
  • Jumps
  • Rolls
  • Handstands
  • Cartwheels

Apparatus Focus:

  • Pupils will explore different equipment setups
  • They’ll be encouraged to create their own ways of moving from one side to the other

This approach supports creativity, problem-solving, and physical literacy.

Everybody loves this term in the gym, so I’m sure their will be plenty to talk about when they get home.

 

PE Reminder

Please ensure pupils:

  • Come dressed appropriately on PE days
  • Have appropriate footwear.  Now that the weather is changing, footwear can be changed before PE.
  • Have hair tied up
  • Remove jewellery and watches before the session

Week 1

🏉 PE Update – Rugby Focus

Over the last three weeks of term 1, our PE lessons centred around rugby skills, especially passing and moving with the ball. Pupils learnt some key rules of the game:

  • Passes must go backwards.
  • The team must stay behind the ball carrier.
  • A forward pass or drop results in a knock-on, giving possession to the other team.

To reinforce these skills, we’ve played a variety of fun and active games:

🎯 Canadian Goose

Everyone starts with a ball. On command, balls are placed down and one is removed. Players without a ball become robbers, trying to steal balls and pull flags from others.

🏃 Flag Fury

Players move freely, trying to collect flags from others and attach them to their own belts—only one flag per person before moving on.

🐻 Bears and Buffaloes

Pairs line up in the middle. On their team name being called, they run to score a try while the opposing team tries to pull their tags.

🚪 Great Escape

Attackers start in a central square and try to escape to the edge without losing their tag, while defenders attempt to stop them.

❄️ Rugby Freeze Tag

Catchers tag others using the ball. Tagged players freeze with hands up until freed by a high five.

🪺 Inside the Raven’s Nest

Four teams compete to collect balls from the centre. The goal is to get three balls into their team hoop.

Maths Week Scotland

Maths Week Scotland took place during week beginning 22nd September 2025. The theme this year was ‘Wild Maths’.   We had a fun week of maths activities. The Maths Week Scotland mascot ‘MathScot’ was Finn Finity.

During the week, we took part in a Maths Contest on Sumdog, learned about famous mathematicians and studied Roman Numerals. We enjoyed making posters and PowerPoint presentation on our famous mathematicians and shared them with the class. We went on a Shape Scavenger Hunt and Number Hunt, all organised and made by P6.

At the end of the week, we started to write class blogs about our week. Here are some below, we hope you enjoy reading them.

‘P6 organised maths week Scotland and made Finn Finity drawings and then cut them out and then placed them around the school and made a scavenger hunt 5 inside and 5 outside. We made posters and PowerPoints it took us 2.5 weeks to make all together.’

‘On math week Scotland our parents came in and we had to find Finn Finty pictures in and outside the inside the school. There were Challenges at the end of it when we found all the math pictures. We also made stories about Finn Finty the theme was wild.

Lego challenge

We did a Lego challenge, and we got cards with challenges, and we had to make it out of Lego.

We did PowerPoints about famous mathematicians and presented them.’ 

‘Maths blog post

  • We made posters and Power points about famous mathematicians.
  • We also took part in the maths week Scotland Sumdog contest.
  • We took part in a shape hunt that P6 set up for everyone to do.
  • We went with our parents on a scavenger hunt to find our mathscot Finn Finity all over the school.
  • We all made power points with a partner about famous mathematicians and showed them to the class.’

In maths week Scotland P5 were learning about famous mathematicians. We made posters and PowerPoints about them. We had to make the posters bright and eye catching. Finn Finity is the math week math – scot. The P6s have made some Finn Finity Pictures and hung them up around the school. The school photocopied some Finn Finity photos and put them in and out of the school for the hunt. The hunt was when the parents came in.’

‘Math week Scotland – We have been doing lots of math activities and math equations to celebrate. P6 gave us an activity to find shapes around the school, it was very fun.  Mrs Nichloson and Mrs Abernthy gave us activities to do during maths week. Mrs Nicholson did a Lego challenge for each class to do in the senior wing and Mrs Abernthy did a Finn Finity wild story writing. Finn Finity is math weeks mascot he is very cool and colourful. Finn Finity has been shown to everyone in the school. Finn Finity is yellow, red, blue, black and white. We learned about math mathematicians, and we did Albert Einstein and Issac Newton.’  

‘Maths Week Scotland – What we have been doing

  • Sumdog Maths Week Scotland Challenge.

We did good in the Challenge and we tried our hardest but sadly we didn’t win.      (It wasn’t expected for us to win.)

  • Posters and Power Points of mathematicians.

On the board there were seven mathematicians, and we picked different ones and started the posters of there our pick. Then you could pick a partner.

  • The Lego Challenge.

In maths week Scotland Mrs Nicholson made a Lego challenge we would go out in the senior wing and copy the card. When you were finished you would right your name on the whiteboard then take a picture.

  • Finn Finity story’

‘Before it started, we did some Finn Finity challenges like find some shapes and Lego and we did a story about Finn Finity. You had to put Finn Finity on an adventure like somewhere like your garden, the woods, like anywhere it could even be. It could be in space and a rocket. We got our parents to come to the school to find Finn Finitys numbers in the school and out in the little playground.’

We used a lot of Meta-skills. We were communicating, creating, sense-making, focusing, adapting and collaborating.

   

  

Art Lesson

In Art P5 have been learning how to make and use a viewfinder.

We created 2 different sizes for viewfinder and used them to look closely at animals.

We chose our favourite animal and did different views where we zoomed in on the details and textures.

We used and combined different drawing materials to try and create realistic looking images of our animal.

When finished 4 different views we then arranged and mounted our own work.

PE Update – Football Block

This term, all classes have been working on football in PE, with each year group developing skills at their own level.

In Primary 5, our focus was on dribbling, passing, and shooting, and applying these skills in game situations. The pupils worked hard throughout the block and showed great progress. During the final games, they demonstrated a strong understanding of teamwork, positioning, and movement. It was especially good to see growth in personal qualities such as respect, responsibility, determination, resilience, and tolerance.

Their enthusiasm and improvement have been good, and we’re excited to carry this positive momentum into our next activity block!
