Our swimming block finished last week, the last of our school swimming blocks. Our last three weeks did focus on breaststroke with a main aim of improving our leg kick.
In our last week of the term, we were back in the gym and got a quick shot of the three skills involved in basketball – passing, dribbling and shooting.

We had a lovely visit today to Taing House. It was a flying gale but we walked quickly there in record time!
Shereen had some lovely activities sorted for us to do with the customers.
The class had to colour in some pumpkin pictures and paint clay pumpkins. The pumpkin pictures are going up on the walls in Taing House.
The customers were a great help. They gave out plastic gloves and aprons. They asked us questions and praised our art work.
Lowrie was delighted to see his granny and gave her a big cuddle!

In the past few lessons P4/5 have been working on composing their own short melodies. They could only use five notes – C D E F G but they could also add in rests to create interesting rhythms.

In Art we have been spending the past few weeks mixing colours to create different textures, painting tigers and collaging together a picture of a tiger in the jungle which has been inspired by the work of artist Henri Rousseau. We have been learning to combine different art materials to create mix-media artwork.
The final results are awesome, well done!

Pupils were set the task of making a home for Sammy The Snake. They had to use the leaves, branches and flowers in the wildlife garden to create it.
The class was split into groups of three. Very quickly different roles were developed within the group. One person was maybe searching for resources, another was arranging the resources. They had a small amount of time at the beginning to plan what their home might look like.
They worked well with their group members, with great ideas for what could be used. One group in particular had the great idea of using moss to cover the branches.

We have had a brilliant week thinking about money and how to be responsible with it.
Adverts and Influencers
We discussed how adverts and influencers can make us spend money on things we want but might not need. We spoke about adverts and what we had been tempted to buy. We discussed the difference between want and need.
Tesco Prices
We had to guess the price of food items from Tesco. We were actually quite shocked at the price of some simple items that we all have in our kitchen cupboards. We discussed the importance of sticking to a budget.
Setting up a Shop
As part of our leadership for Maths Week Scotland the pupils were keen to set up a shop. We worked alongside Mrs Nisbet and Primary 5. Tills and plastic fruit and vegetables were sourced. The fruit and vegetables were labelled. Challenges were set for the class to buy things within a certain budget.
Maths Posters and Figures
We also made posters and money figures before Maths Week so everybody knew it was going to be about money.
Board Games
We spoke about good and bad money choices. We then created money board games using these choices as cards in the game. We worked in pairs and our boards had to be bright and attractive.
Pupil Voice
I liked making the money games because it was good to work with a partner.
My favourite thing about Maths Week Scotland was making the game.
I learned that spending all your money on the first thing is not good.

Last year Primary 4 planted potatoes with Ms Hutchison. Last week they dug them up and they also harvested some apples that were growing on the apple trees. Each pupil got a bag of potatoes to take home and they were delicious!
We had a few extra so we made a special delivery to Alex Armitage. This month he is eating only food that can be grown in Shetland.
He managed to make an apple crumble with the apples and the potatoes! He even popped along to give us a special thank you card!

P4/5 have learned a new song called ‘Hey You!’ written by Joanna Mangona for the Charanga music scheme. The song is made up of two verses using two different voices – rapping and singing. In the videos below you can see the class performing the song with an instrumental section where they are playing xylophones and glockenspiels.
Our next step is to work in pairs to compose a short melody which can be played in the instrumental section. This will be shared with you soon!

P4/5 are half way through their swimming block already. So far we have focused on front and back crawl and swimming longer distances before a break. In the remaining half, there will be more focus on breast stroke.
