Making Ice Cream

As part of our big question, we were looking at freezing and melting and what better way to investigate this than making our own ice-cream. Recipe is below!

Make Ice Cream
Resources:
  • Ice cubes (sufficient to half-fill the larger bag)
  • 2 re-sealable plastic bags (1 small, 1 large)
  • 120g salt
  • 120ml milk
  • 20g caster sugar
  • 2.5ml vanilla essence
  • Spoon
  • Gloves (optional)
Activity:
  1. Pour the milk, sugar and vanilla essence into the small plastic bag. Ensure it is sealed properly so that it cannot leak.
  2. Place the ice cubes and salt into the large bag, then place the small bag inside the larger bag and seal shut.
  3. Shake the bags vigorously for around 5 minutes. Note: Squeezing the bag repeatedly speeds up the process. You may wish to wear gloves as the bag becomes very cold.
  4. While you are shaking the bag, ask your child what they think is happening to the milk mixture (milk is freezing from a liquid into a solid)
  5. Open the outer bag and carefully remove the inner bag, making sure you don’t get any of the salty water into the ice cream. Note: If it’s not ready, simply reseal the bags and continue to shake.
  6. Share the ice cream with your child/ren
