As part of our big question, we were looking at freezing and melting and what better way to investigate this than making our own ice-cream. Recipe is below!
Make Ice Cream
Resources:
-
Ice cubes (sufficient to half-fill the larger bag)
-
2 re-sealable plastic bags (1 small, 1 large)
-
120g salt
-
120ml milk
-
20g caster sugar
-
2.5ml vanilla essence
-
Spoon
-
Gloves (optional)
Activity:
- Pour the milk, sugar and vanilla essence into the small plastic bag. Ensure it is sealed properly so that it cannot leak.
- Place the ice cubes and salt into the large bag, then place the small bag inside the larger bag and seal shut.
- Shake the bags vigorously for around 5 minutes. Note: Squeezing the bag repeatedly speeds up the process. You may wish to wear gloves as the bag becomes very cold.
- While you are shaking the bag, ask your child what they think is happening to the milk mixture (milk is freezing from a liquid into a solid)
- Open the outer bag and carefully remove the inner bag, making sure you don’t get any of the salty water into the ice cream. Note: If it’s not ready, simply reseal the bags and continue to shake.
- Share the ice cream with your child/ren
