Yesterday we guessed how many people live on Bressay. ‘1000, 10, 67?’ Then we looked up ‘Kiddle’ to check. The answer was 360. Here some other fun facts we learned in preparation for our trip to Bressay on the Fivla today. We looked at the features of an island and named the boats we could see.
World Cup Trophy draw-a-long
‘Can we do draw-a-long of the World Cup Trophy the mascots had in the song? And put in on the blog?’
Here we go……..
World Cup Dough Disco
Following the fun with playdough this week the recipe has been requested by pupils to make at home. Add your own flavours, colours, herbs or spices.

World Cup Mascots song
Maple the Moose, Zayu the Jaguar and Clutch the Eagle lead the way as this year’s World Cup mascots.
We heard Ozzie tell us facts about the World Cup then listened to him sing a song about the mascots. We remembered that there are 48 countries in the World Cup this year but when it started in Uruguay in 1930 there were only 13 teams. How many more countries are there now?……….
‘Can you put the other Ozzie song on about football?’ was a request today so here it is.
International Day of Play 11th June 2026
Play is recognized as a universal child’s right under Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Here is a link to this year’s Play Scotland paper plane challenge:
Play-in-All-Weathers-Anywhere-A5
In class we made Scottish airline paper planes with a UK registration code similar to car registration plates. We then flew our paper planes in the GP room. We guessed first then measured the distance using standard and non-standard units.
The owner of the plane that flew the furthest chose a wooden spoon to measure how far it flew. It travelled a distance of 17 wooden spoons. The wooden spoon was the same length as a ruler.
Number bonds
We then played a number bond game with our bodies and 3 hoops.
We practised number bonds on whiteboards then completed worksheets which were either bronze, silver or gold.
‘it was fun playing the game’.
‘Can we play the count on game tomorrow and say the ways to make 10?’
‘Can we play the dice game? We can dance when we roll a number bond to 10?’
Skeletons
Following on from a book taken in from home, 10 Dippy Dinosaurs, we watched a clip ‘All about Dippy’.
We then wondered how many bones were in a dinosaur skeleton.
We guessed first then tried to count how many. Our guesses included 619, 1300, 205, 400, 16, 120, 1 billion, 100, 600 and 101. Google told us the answer was about 200.
Then we wondered some more. Are there more or less bones in a human skeleton? What do you think?
Subtraction song
We warmed up by listening to Jack Hartmann’s subtraction song. We then practised our number formation using whiteboard pens before completing subtraction pages in our workbooks. We had a class discussion about what subtraction means.
‘it’s taking away’
‘making a number smaller’
‘it’s minus’
‘it means less than’
‘I can use finger patterns to help’
