Lerwick Up Helly Aa

The last Tuesday in January is always Up Helly Aa in Lerwick. Lerwick’s is the largest fire festival although other Shetland communities have them too.

This is a link to a you tube clip of the morning procession of the Jarls Squad

Jennifer took these photos of Up Helly Aa. Her nephew was in the Junior Jarl Squad. The first photos are of the Junior Squad with their galley and then there are photos of the adult procession and galley burning.

Burravoe – quadblogging

As its our week to be the focus school we thought we should tell you something about us.

Our school is in the middle of Burravoe. We have 2 classrooms and a hall. We use one classroom as are main one and the other as our little play area. There are 3 schools in yell, Mid Yell Junior High School and Cullivoe Primary School.  After we finish primary we go to Mid Yell Junior High School until secondary 4. After we finish secondary 4 we go to The Anderson High School in Lerwick and we have to stay in the hostel during the week because it would be too far to travel every day.

Our schools play ground is also the community play ground as well. We have a Zip line, Swing sets, Slide, See saw, boat, blocks and football pitch in the Playground, we also have a vegetable patch and a raise bed.We grow vegetables such as carrots, cauliflower and lettuce at school in the vegetable bed.

There’s not much traffic around Yell. You might only see a couple of cars go down the road in half an hour. You can cycle your bike about freely. The highest temperature it can get in the summer is about 17°c but it is normally only wet and windy. We get a lot of power cuts here because of the wind and we might not get the signal for the TV or Mobile Phones. Yell is a good place to see nature. The most exciting animals to see are whales and otters. We get a lot of Killer Whales in Shetland. The post office is a small part of someone’s home! We have a couple of letterboxes around Burravoe.

The sea can be seen from everywhere on the island. The pier is a great place to see boats. Mostly everyone on has a boat to go fishing with in the summer. The fish that’s catched the most is mackerel, haddock, cod and piltocks. Marine Heritage is part of Shetland couture. Fishing and boats is a big part of Shetland.

There is a little museum called the Old Haa which is just down the road from our school, we sometimes walk down to the Old Haa on little school trips. There is also a camp site at the marina next to a toilet which has a boat for a roof.

In the winter people dress up as Vikings for a festival called Up helly aa. The Vikings hold big torches with fire on the ends and walk down the road and they set fire to a little Viking boat which floats in the sea. The Burravoe carnival is when people dress up and go on big floats which drive down the road to Burravoe hall last year we went on a small world float and we won 2nd prize.

Shadow Puppets

We all  made a shadow puppets.   I did a girl called Mary she likes  fish and chips  and  she likes  school and she likes maths and she has a laptop. You have to get a stick  and you have  to get a peac of  card and a pencil. You have to  draw on the card.   We had to cut it  out.  You get the stick and tape it  in the  middle.  We had to make a  puppet  show  on the white bord.
