Course Content

What will I learn?

The aim of the S2/3 Art and Design elective course is to enable you to enhance your creative ability and develop your artistic skills. Through Art and Design, you will have rich opportunities to be creative and to experience inspiration and enjoyment. You will explore a wide range of two- and three-dimensional media and technologies through practical activities as well as create, express and communicate ideas.

Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to:

  • deepen your understanding of culture in Scotland and the wider world
  • experience partnerships with professional arts companies, creative adults and cultural organisations;
  • develop skills and techniques that are relevant to specific art forms;
  • recognise and develop your creative and aesthetic talents.

Teaching Methods

What will I do?

The course is divided into three elements:

1. Expressive Activity

This activity develops skills in media handling: drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D work etc. Observational drawing is a very important part of this activity. Expressive work could be in the form of still-life, portraiture, landscape, sculpture, printmaking etc.

2. Critical Activity

Critical studies will be incorporated during the session and will involve the study of designers and artists and their inspirations and working methods in relation to your practical work e.g. movements such as Impressionists, Colourists, artists, architects, ceramics, mask designers, graphic designers etc.

3. Design Activity

This activity challenges problem-solving abilities by working through the design process. You will work from a design brief where you outline requirements and constraints and identify and solve design problems relevant to your particular area of design. Design work could be in the form of mask design, ceramic pots and graphics or jewellery design.

Assessment & Homework

This will be facilitated by the main elements of creating, presenting, evaluating and appreciating through:

  • continuous assessment
  • observation – self/peer/teacher
  • discussion
  • homework
  • evaluation – self/peer/teacher

Homework assignments will focus on helping you consolidate knowledge and skills and will normally develop any ongoing class work. Most of the Critical Activity assignments will be carried out as homework. You will be issued with a sketchbook to enable development of drawing skills.
