South Ayrshire Instrumental Music Service
The IMS is part of education services. Through our core IMS activity we reach 1,400 children and young people every year. Our team provide music education on a number of musical instruments.
Around 500 children and young people are taking part in our 15 authority groups which rehearse in the evening. This gives young people an opportunity to develop and extend their skill.
Our YMI programme reaches children in every primary and ASN school, in 2024/25 over 2,000 children will benefit from this nationally funded programme
You can find out more about the different strands of what we do through the links below
- Instrumental Instruction in schools – music education for strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, voice, guitar, highland bagpipe
- Authority Activities – currently 15 ensembles, bands, orchestras, choirs
- Youth Music Initiative Programme – the IMS plans, delivers and supports music education projects across all primary and ASN schools in South Ayrshire

Summer Sessions – June 2021
During the challenges of the 2020/21 school session, South Ayrshire Instrumental Music Service adapted delivery of instrumental lessons to ensure we reached young people in schools and at home delivering over 14,000 live lessons across the session. Our young musicians amazed us with their resilience, positive attitude and ability to continue to learn. We were unable to hold our normal ensemble and group activities, but pupils took part in a 6-week virtual rehearsal programme across different authority ensembles. Please enjoy these performances:
Junior Strings – Cancion del Amor
Senior Strings – Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
Junior Concert Band – Happy
Senior Concert Band – Cake by the Ocean
Percussion Ensemble – Thunderstruck
Chamber Choir – Seasons of Love
Pipe Band – Mairi’s Wedding
New Music Collective – Schools’ Out
In the Spring of 2020 during lockdown, our learners along with current and past team members and friends came together to say thank you to our wonderful NHS for their unstinting work. Thank you to the Music Education Partnership Group who made parts available as part of their We Make Music for the NHS initiative.
We were inundated with videos of performances which we have collated here. We hope you enjoy our tribute! Over the Rainbow – South Ayrshire Instrumental Music Service Video
