Homework

Homework is an integral part of learning and teaching.
It allows children to develop their skills in independent learning, transferring their learning skills from school to home. It also strengthens the link between home and school in providing an opportunity for parents and carers to participate in the learning process with their child.

Homework is issued on a weekly basis and will be relevant to your child’s age and stage of learning. Homework can be issued for all curricular areas and may include a variety of learning task including projects and family learning tasks that parents and children can undertake together.

Homework should not take any more than 15-30 minutes to complete each night. If homework is taking longer than this or your child is experiencing anxiety over homework, please contact the school to discuss this.

General advice to support a positive homework experience can be found below:

• help your child to succeed by providing a quiet place to work;
• try to remember to sign homework and diaries, etc;
• encourage both reading aloud and silently at home, from P1 to P7;
• remember to ask your child lots of questions as part of their reading;
• help your child to learn number facts and times tables regularly;
• remember that both written and unwritten homework is valuable;
• encourage children to space out research tasks to avoid leaving it all to the night before it’s due; and
• if homework causes problems do not hesitate to let us know.
