🔬 Sciences at Our School
At St Charles, we believe that science education inspires curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Through Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, our Sciences curriculum helps children explore the world around them, ask meaningful questions, and develop the skills to investigate, understand, and shape their environment.
Why Sciences Matter
Learning science encourages children to:
-
Develop a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world
-
Understand how things work and why they happen
-
Make informed decisions about health, the environment, and technology
-
Build skills in observation, experimentation, analysis, and communication
-
Prepare for future learning and careers in an increasingly scientific and technological world
How We Teach Sciences
Our teaching is active, inquiry-based, and connected to real-life contexts. Learning is structured around five key organisers:
-
🌍 Planet Earth Children explore topics such as sustainability, climate, energy, and the environment.
-
⚡ Forces, Electricity and Waves Pupils investigate movement, magnetism, sound, and light, and learn how electricity powers our world.
-
🧬 Biological Systems Learners study living things, body systems, life cycles, and the interdependence of organisms.
-
🧪 Materials Children explore the properties, uses, and changes of materials through hands-on experiments.
-
📰 Topical Science Pupils engage with current scientific developments and issues, helping them connect learning to the wider world.
We encourage children to think like scientists — to observe, question, predict, and test ideas. Our approach supports learners of all abilities and promotes collaboration, creativity, and confidence.
We also work in partnership with the wider community to enrich science learning through outdoor experiences, STEM activities, and cross-curricular projects.
