Health and Wellbeing

đź’š Health & Wellbeing at Our School:
Why and How We Teach It
At St Charles’, we believe that children’s wellbeing is the foundation for successful learning and a happy, healthy life. Our Health and Wellbeing curriculum, shaped by Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, is designed to nurture each child’s emotional, social, and physical development in a safe and supportive environment.
Why Health & Wellbeing Matters
Health and Wellbeing is central to helping children build resilience, develop positive relationships, manage emotions, and make informed choices. By supporting wellbeing, we empower children to thrive in school and beyond — as confident individuals, effective contributors, and responsible citizens.
How We Teach Health & Wellbeing
Our approach is rooted in compassion, inclusion, and respect. We ensure that every child feels valued and supported through:
  • A Nurturing Ethos  We create a caring school culture where children feel safe, listened to, and understood. Relationships are at the heart of our practice, and we promote kindness, empathy, and emotional growth in all aspects of school life.
  • Barnardo’s PATHS Programme  All pupils take part in PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies), a research-based programme that helps children develop emotional literacy, self-control, and social skills through structured, age-appropriate lessons.
  • Glasgow Motivation and Wellbeing Profile (GMWP)  We use this toolkit to gather insights into each child’s wellbeing and motivation, allowing us to tailor learning experiences that meet individual needs and support personal development.
  • GIRFEC (Getting It Right For Every Child)  Our curriculum and learning opportunities are underpinned by the GIRFEC approach, ensuring that every child receives the right support at the right time, helping them to grow and achieve their full potential.
We work in close partnership with families and the wider community to promote wellbeing both in and out of school. Together, we help children flourish — emotionally, socially, and academically
