Professional Learning for Classroom Assistants: Renfrewshire’s Approach

Renfrewshire is proud to be one of the first local authorities to provide a bespoke programme of professional learning for support staff.  As part of our work within the Scottish Attainment Challenge, our first cohort of Classroom Assistants participated in a 12 week programme of professional learning in session 2017/18.  This programme has been offered to further cohorts of support staff over the past 3 sessions with some changes made in light of participant feedback.

As part of our initial work with the University of Strathclyde, researchers spoke with Classroom Assistants, teachers, Head Teachers and staff from the central team to consider the crucial role that Classroom Assistants undertake in Renfrewshire’s Schools.  Their findings are outlined in the report below:

Participants in our professional learning programme share their learning at our annual Celebration Event which is attended by support staff, school staff, friends and family, members of the central team, elected members and partner agencies.  Learning is shared through the creation of display boards, the content of which is chosen by our participants:

‘Raising Attainment’

‘Making a Difference’

‘Acting on Knowledge’

‘Growing in Confidence’

‘Just Ask’

‘Better Partnerships’

‘Our Learning Journey’
