How we embed it at Dargavel ELCC?
Within Dargavel ELCC, we focus on recycling paper and plastic correctly. All plastic containers that we have from our snack are collected throughout the week, counted and disposed of in the appropriate bin. All paper goes into our paper recycling bin which is situated within the creative area and is then put in the appropriate bin as and when required. We also have a food waste bin situated within the social zone; this bin is used at both snack times and lunch where the children are responsible for disposing of any leftover food. The children are highly encouraged throughout the day to use the correct bins.
You may also notice, next to the entrance gate outside we have got a clothing donation bank. Please feel free to use this to donate any old clothes, children or adults you may have. When the bin is full, the company come an empty it, weight how much we have, and we receive a small donation which goes towards maintaining our garden allotment throughout the year.
Within the garden, our children help to grow our own fruit and vegetables which is sometimes used for snack and plants to help bring wildlife – bees, butterflies, etc.- into the garden. When using the grown produce for snack, children help to prepare this food, taking responsibility in looking after the environment and preparing healthy foods.
What you can do at home.
At home, if you don’t already do so, you could encourage your children to put packaging, paper or food in the appropriate bin. This not only gives them some responsibility but also help them learn and begin to recognise how we dispose of this appropriately.
