Free School Meals and Clothing Grants

Applications for free school meals and clothing grants are now open. By applying for either or both provisions now parents can ensure everything is in place ahead of the new school year.

Parents must make sure their application is received by the council no later than Friday 12 July to guarantee payment of clothing grants before the schools go back or to have free school meals from the start of term.

Those parents who have previously applied for free school meals and clothing grants will be sent a letter to their home address. If there has been no change in your family circumstances that affect any benefits you may receive, you can complete and sign the declaration form and return it to the council.

If there has been a change in your family circumstances or if you are applying for the first time, visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmealsandclothinggrants to complete an application form. You will also be able to read about eligibility for free school meals and school clothing grants as well as what information you need to include with your form.

Paper copies are also available for our school and from the Council’s customer service centres.

Christmas Memories

The festive season is always busy in school and this year was no exception.  Hopscotch Theatre Company put on an impressive pantomime for the whole school and all stages had great fun at their class parties (Santa even managed to fit in visits to the nursery, P1 and 2 despite his busy schedule!).  Our Christmas jumper day raised lots of money for the St Vincent’s Hospice and Primary 7 pupils showed real Christmas spirit by writing personal seasonal stories for their P1 buddies.

Our Christmas Celebrations may seem like a distant memory but we thought you might like to see this photo of some of our P1a pupils just before their big performance in December.  It’s also an opportunity for us to say a huge “well done” to all of the Primary 1 to 3 pupils who sang their hearts out and “thank you” to everyone who came along,  provided costumes  and helped in so many different ways.

Primary 4 to 7 also deserve credit for the very high standard which they achieved singing a real mix of challenging, unusual and entertaining Christmas songs.  There’s nothing quite like Christmas in a school!

Inspired!

We are very proud of two of our Primary 3 pupils whose artwork has been selected for the Inspired exhibition which takes place in Paisley Museum & Art Galleries.  This annual event showcases the best artwork from school pupils across Renfrewshire and will run from 20th January until 15th April.  Anya and Elena created their work during art  classes with Mrs Devine who accompanied them to a special preview reception for all the exhibitors.  Well done girls!

Road Safety Week 2017

This is Road Safety Week and we were delighted to welcome both of our lollipop ladies along to assembly today. Mrs Ingalls and Mrs Singer answered questions posed by some of our P3a pupils and gave us some really good advice to help us keep safe when crossing the road. Their two top tips were a) not to step out onto the road until they let you know that it is safe to do so and b) keep looking and listening as you cross the road – don’t be looking at your mobile phone!  The main message of this year’s campaign is Speed Down and we watched a short video which demonstrated how long it can take for a driver to slow down or stop if they see something on the road.  We can encourage children to be careful on the roads but ultimately it’s the adults who drive the cars who make the difference by keeping their speed down.  Why not have a look at the video we watched today at assembly?

Wet Weather Arrangements

During inclement weather 5 bells are rung if it is too wet/cold for Primary 1-3 to go outside.  Primary 4 – 7 pupils are allowed to choose to go out or stay in.  Pupils may only go out in inclement weather if they are properly dressed with jackets or coats with hoods or hats, sturdy weather proof shoes or wellingtons.   Staff will have the final say on whether pupils stay in or go out.  6 bells will ring if I consider the weather is too bad or dangerous eg if conditions are icy and no pupils will be allowed outside.

Inclement Weather

Unfortunately at Bridge of Weir Primary we have no before or after school care provision. In inclement weather we do our best to provide a safe and dry place for all children.  This can only be provided when staff are available to supervise the children, usually about 8.45 a.m.  Five bells will be rung to signal to children to come in.  There are a number of childminders/care providers in the village. Appropriate phone numbers for parents to contact can be obtained from the school office.

Mrs Vallance’s Big Day

Mrs Vallance had a wonderful day celebrating her retirement and loved visiting all the classes to let them see her lovely gifts.   Her sporting hero Andy Murray wasn’t able to be there in person but a life size cut out accompanied her on her visits and a card from Judy, Andy and Jamie Murray (just about) made up for it.  Each class presented Mrs Vallance with a special memento and the day was full of surprises including a “flash mob” dance in the playground and a rendition of Carol King’s “You’ve Got A Friend” both of which involved every pupil in the school.   Our theme for the day was Wimbledon and finished off with a nail biting tennis  final between Stanley in P6 and Findlay in P5. The whole school watched as the boys thrashed it out in a very closely contested game with  Findlay  just edging ahead and becoming the very first winner of the Vallance Cup.  The standard of tennis was outstanding – watch out Andy Murray!

Read, Write, Count bags are coming our way!

All P2 and P3 children will receive their Read, Write, Count bags on Monday 21 November and P1s will get Bookbug bags on the same day.  This is a brilliant initiative which recognises the importance of learning at home as well as at school and we’re very excited about it! Parents of children in P1-3 are warmly invited to join us at 2pm or 6pm on the 21st when you’ll have the chance to explore the contents of the bag with your child. We hope you can come!
