Burns Assembly

rbt-burns

As you know we have been working very hard on our Scots and Burns poems. We are having our whole school Burns Assembly on Friday 27th where our winners will recite their poems to the school and an invited panel of judges. Each of our winners will receive a certificate and 3 lucky winners from P1- 3, P4 & 5 and P6 & 7 will be awarded a trophy to hold for a year.

We would invite the children to wear something tartan on Friday, if they have it, to help us celebrate Burns Day.

We are all looking forward to the performances and pictures will be posted on the school blog next week.

Thank you once again for your support.

Tam O’Shanter

This week we had a look at the famous Robert Burns poem, Tam O’Shanter! We listened to the poem as well as watching a modern take on YouTube, which we found to be quite funny! We then completed different tasks in groups in order to explore the poem further. These tasks included: writing a sequel to the poem, doing a character study on Tam O’Shanter, creating a map showing Tam’s journey around Ayr, identifying important imagery within the poem, translating some Scottish words and creating a storyboard to illustrate the poem. Pupils extremely enjoyed learning about the story of Tam O’Shanter and were very successful with their tasks! We hope you enjoy the pictures of our finished Tam O’Shanter display!

Image result for steven brown mccoo

Throughout the school Steven Brown’s artwork is proving very popular as quite a few of the classes are recreating their own versions of his coo designs. On Friday afternoon we popped down to P1H to have a look at their coo artwork …….. and we were very impressed!

You were able to comment on the wonderful colours the P1s used and the technique they used to create their coo’s coat. Likewise, when P1H stopped by our class to have a look at our coo designs they could point out the similarities with their own designs

What a fabulous job P1H. Well done!

P3/2 week beg 23/01/17

I hope you enjoyed your weekend.  Homework and news as follows:

P2 Homework

Spelling this week is y at the end as in holly, story, jolly.

Reading books out on Monday.

Maths homework will be looking at change to 20p.

P3 Homework

Spelling this week will be ea as in bread, spread

Reading books out on Monday.  Some pupils have also chosen a second more challenging book from the library that can be read alongside the core reader.

Maths this week can be chosen from the Maths grid.

Other news

On Monday I will be hearing all of the Scottish poems.  Pupils will then be asked if they would like to be put forward for the school competition.  These groups will be sent to other classes on Tuesday when an overall class winner will be chosen.  Good luck everyone.

On Friday we will be having our Burns school assembly in the afternoon.  Each class poem winner will perform on the stage in front of the school and poetry judges.

We will continue our ERIC (Everyone reads in class) time on Tuesday and Read and Munch on Friday.  We have also introduced simultaneous reading in class on a Thursday.  This is where everyone in class reads their core reader at the same time at their desks.  As they read I circulate and listen in to readers.  We also continue our group reading times with the teacher.  With this variety of reading styles the pupils are really enjoying reading in class and are working on the different strategies if they get stuck with a new word.  This includes sounding it out,  reading on, looking at the picture, splitting up the word, asking for help.

Have a great week

P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 23.1.17

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you are enjoying  your weekend after the very busy and creative week we’ve had. I hope you are looking forward to another busy and fun week. Please keep reading for your homework and reminders.

Spelling: Please complete list a for ar  or ed in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. Please continue to write out your spelling words 3 times using SaCaWaC in the same way as we do in class. You should then write a sentence for each of your first 6 spelling words concentrating on using interesting VCOP – vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. I have explained what the highlighting in your jotters means, please share this with someone at home.

Reading: We are continuing with our novel study – Danny the Champion of the World. As discussed in class there is no formal written homework to be completed for this. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson. Please read chapters 7 and 8 for Wednesday 1st March.

If you find there are words that you don’t understand please take a note of them in your Book Detectives jotter (remembering the page number) and, if possible, use a dictionary to find out their meaning . We will start our lesson by discussing them in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: As discussed in class this challenge will be ongoing for the whole of this term. You have all set yourself a personal target based on the number of books you read last term and your aim is now to reach that target or beat it! I have been really pleased to see so many of you recording your books in your reading passports. Remember it is the quality of the books you read that is important. Please choose carefully to ensure the books you are reading are at the correct level for you – not too easy or too hard. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC time.

Maths:  This week I have posted another set of worded problems on your maths homework blog.  Please complete these in  your maths homework jotter. As always, please read each question carefully. You should ensure you are showing workings AND giving a full sentence answer. This homework is due for Thursday. All jotters should now be covered.

A high standard of work is being produced from most of you. Well done! Keep it up!

Both group 1 and group 2 can find their maths homework here:

P7M Maths Homework – Groups 3 & 4

Amazing Algebra

Below are a variety of questions relating to the areas you have been learning within our Algebra topic. Please remember to show ALL working for each question.  This exercise should be completed in your Maths homework jotter for Friday 27th January.

Writing Algebraic Expressions

Example: p multiply by 5 add 7 = 5p + 7

(1)  m multiply by 8 add 7

(2)  y multiply by 9 subtract 3

(3)  t multiply by 3 subtract from x

(4)  2 multiply by x subtract from 18

Gathering “like” Terms

Example: 3a + a + 6b – 2b = 4a + 4b

(5)   4a + 8a                (6)   6d + 4c – 2d         (7)   3b – b + 7c + 2c

(8)   c + 9d + 8c – 6d            (9)   4m + 4m – 8c + c     (10)    9y – 8x + 3z – y

Substituting

Example: 22 – a = 22 – 10

a = 10         b = 7          c = 8

(11)   a + 10                 (12)   a + b + c              (13)   45 + c – a

(14)   8a – 45               (15)  2bc – a

Solving Equations

Example: y + 4 = 10

y + 4 – 4 = 10 – 4

     y = 6

(16)   a + 15 = 26                  (17)   4b = 16                (18)   n – 15 = 37

(19)   125 ÷ t = 5                   (20)   10c = 200

(14)   9c – 16a               (15)  0.5c – 10

Solving Equations

Example: y + 4 = 10

y + 4 – 4 = 10 – 4
