Amazing Algebra
Below are a variety of questions relating to the areas you have been learning within our Algebra topic. Please remember to show ALL working for each question. This exercise should be completed in your Maths homework jotter for Friday 27th January.
Writing Algebraic Expressions
Example: p multiply by 5 add 7 = 5p + 7
(1) m multiply by 8 add 7
(2) y multiply by 9 subtract 3
(3) t multiply by 3 subtract from x
(4) 2 multiply by x subtract from 18
Gathering “like” Terms
Example: 3a + a + 6b – 2b = 4a + 4b
(5) 4a + 8a (6) 6d + 4c – 2d (7) 3b – b + 7c + 2c
(8) c + 9d + 8c – 6d (9) 4m + 4m – 8c + c (10) 9y – 8x + 3z – y
Substituting
Example: 22 – a = 22 – 5 = 17
a = 5 b = 1 c = 10
(11) a + b + c (12) 2c – a (13) 7b + ac
(14) 9c – 16a (15) 0.5c – 10
Solving Equations
Example: y + 4 = 10
y + 4 – 4 = 10 – 4
y = 6
(16) a + 15.2 = 26.6 (17) 40b = 160 (18) 2n – 153 = 37
(19) 125 ÷ t = 5 (20) 10c = 200
