Back in May, we applied for Food for Thought funding to give us funds to develop Food and Health Education at Barsail. I’m very happy to announce that we were successful in our bid and have been awarded the full amount we applied for. This money is going to enable us to purchase 6 portable cooking stations and enough equipment for whole classes to become involved in practical cooking sessions.
The opportunities for learning through these practical cooking sessions are endless. Including:
- developing practical maths skills like weighing and measuring volume in recipes, timing skills and problem solving
- developing literacy through reading recipes, following instructions, devising shopping lists and writing menus
- cooking and tasting foods from around the world and food linked to world festivals and culture
- opportunities for enterprise
- learning about sustainability and the farm to fork journey
- developing a passion for food and cooking
- gaining essential life skills by being able to safely prepare and cook snacks and meals
This is a very exciting project for both our pupils and teachers. We have many inspiring activities in the pipeline, including visits from food specialists, competitions and enterprise events. We’re hoping to showcase some of our new-found skills during open afternoons and school fairs. The Food for Thought equipment will be used as a learning tool and enjoyed by children in the school for many years to come.
We cannot wait to begin this journey and we’ll keep you updated along the way.
