When She Struggled to Walk

I cannot remember my cat Nelly,

The sound of her mew,

The sound of her purr.

The feel of her fur against my skin.

I cannot remember her,

But I can remember how she used to kill worms,

And not mice,

How she hid them under the rug,

Not wanting us to find them.

I cannot remember my cat Nelly,

But from the stories,

She was a loving cat.

I cannot remember her,

But I can remember,

The times she struggled to walk,

To eat,

To be calm.

And the day…

She got put down,

Out of her misery,

Out of her pain,

Out of our life.

I didn’t believe it when I heard it,

I couldn’t believe it.
