A Bridge is Built

A big thank you to Mr Woodrow and his class who designed and built a bridge across a drain in Nature’s Wood. The drain was quite a jump for some of our youngest users and the bridge will make it much easier to cross.

Mr Woodrow’s team used recycled materials and pallets that the school’s Mitie staff had available. They were very efficient and the task was completed in a week.

More pallets will be used to construct the bug hotels and photos of this will follow.

Bird Boxes with Heather Hamilton

Heather Hamilton from the Highland Perthshire Community Land Trust has been working with us to fix, build and paint birdboxes.

Normally we would be out with Heather planting trees at Dun Collich but we can’t do that this year. Instead Heather offered to come in and support the team by making some bird boxes.

P7 had their first session with her this week, it is Mr Liney’s class next week and Mr Poole’s GME class the following one so keep checking back for more photos!

Thanks very much Heather, it was great to see you and we all enjoyed sanding, drilling, hammering, sawing and painting. The birds will be happy too.

Nature’s Wood Coille Nádurrach are in the Big Issue

This week the Big Issue are featuring 15 Scottish schools who are participating in Social Enterprise projects. We were invited to be included in this group and are very proud to see our project in print.

Your can read about the issue here.

Compassionate, creative and resilient: young people’s pandemic response

Copies can be purchased by parents of P6 and P7 pupils through the school or from any Big Issue vendor in Scotland.

We’ve done lots of maintenance to keep the space wild and accessible

Our 3 classes have worked steadily across 2 terms of school to create a natural space that is accessible and wild.

  • We’ve removed over 200 tree tubes, stakes and zip ties
  • Lopped head high branches to create a safe walking and running corridor
  • Removed ash die back in an attempt to stem is spread locally
  • Used the materials from our maintenance work to create a den building space
  • Done an intensive litter pick to keep the wildlife safe
  • Used donated tree rounds to install a seating area for classes

Welcome to Nature’s Wood

Our Project Nature’s Wood

We are doing a project where we are converting a small woodland space at the back of our school into a safe outdoor learning space.

Here are some of our goals for the space: to make it a safe outdoor learning space for all, to tidy the area and help the trees grow healthily, to keep it as wild as possible whilst also making it a nice clean space, we have many goals for Nature’s Wood and hope to achieve as many as possible.

It is a small social enterprise to help this small space and make it safe for all species.

There are three classes working together on this project; P7, P6/7 and GME 4-7.
