We have been learning about money in class. We have been looking at the different coins and using them to count different sums of money. P2’s have been working up to 20p, although they have been able to count bigger amounts. P3 have been using 50p and £1 coins to count amounts.

Today we started our mini project of growing potatoes.
Erin put our seed potatoes in an egg box in order for them to chit- sprout roots. Hopefully when we come back from our holidays they will have started to chit.
Today P2/3 went over to Blackford Primary School to take part in the Awongalema Tree activities provided by the Art, Drama and Music specialists.
They heard the story of the Awongalema Tree. They had to draw and paint a beautiful, colourful tree. They also learned to play different percussion instruments to different parts of the story. The children also performed in the final performance of the story with singing dancing and playing the instruments.
Everybody came away with a smile on their face!
A big thank you to the specialists and Blackford Primary for letting us use their school.
When Finlay was reading his book called The Victorian Adventure, we came across a water pump used then. We discussed how these were found out to be sources of diseases (especially cholera- a deadly disease) back in the Victorian times. We watched in class a short video clip about how it was detected. Here is a link to this video, for those who would like to see it again.
Today we learned about Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day and how it is the day before Lent .
We then looked at the recipe and discussed how it is set out with ingredients, utensils and instructions. We looked at the different bossy verbs used.
We then used our knowledge of doubles to double the amount of our ingredients, so we would have enough for everyone. We then discussed hygiene and cooking. Finally we got down to making our pancakes!
We measured our ingredients, discussing grams and millilitres and when these are used. We discussed sieving flour and beating the batter to get air into the mixture. Then we used our new electric pan to cook our pancakes. We ate them plain or with a little jam. We discussed the importance of brushing our teeth later.
Thaumatropes were very popular in Victorian times. They were a kind of optical illusion. We all made one with a bird and a cage and then we were able to make our own design.
Katie showed us little Victorian toys, which her Dad has found with his metal detector. She also brought in a book which helped her identify different toys which are known to be found. The boys especially loved the cannon, which the Victorians actually fired.
Thanks to Katie’s Dad for letting us see these super finds.
