Creative in the Kitchen

Shortbread

The children worked well together to prepare and then follow instruction to make shortbread. It smelled delicious and filled the school with its aroma. Part of the learning involved researching the effects of some of the ingredients on our health and bodies.

Cleaning up was an important part of the activity too.

The children worked in research groups. John said, “I used my Steps in Learning jotter to write about how it’s ok to have some fat so that you can be warm but it’s unhealthy to have too much.”

James added, ” I did research for the salt category and the site said that too much could cause heart disease.”

Loving Nature, Magic Maths and Physical Fitness

The children in P6 have started back to school this week with renewed vigour and enthusiasm for their learning.

Bird Watching

Sophie reported that, “we were playing and Ryan bumped into a planter then he shouted because we saw eggs in it.”

Ryan added, “Mrs Garey told us that the eggs belonged to oyster catchers and I thought it was good news because they were new birds to the class and school.”

Darcy said, “Once we saw them we gave them names. “

Maths

We learned about volume and cubic centimetres. We discussed the capacities of cups up to jumbo jets or aircraft carriers.

Practical estimating and measuring was a fun activity in the sunshine. The children’s estimates improved with practise and they improved their skills for life and work working very well together.

Keri explained, “We were estimating how many cups to fill up a jug and we were guessing before we did it.”

“I learned that we needed 7 wee cups to fill the white cups.” Zari added.

Kyle shared, ” Volume is how we measure liquid or air and how much something holds.”

Outdoor P.E.

We’d an ideal opportuniy to improve our health and fitness outside today and took advantage of the weather. It was a pleasant change from being in the wind or rain!

Elise said, “I enjoyed doing the mile because it keeps us nice and fit and we can do it outside.”

Kori commented, “I enjoyed doing the mile because it was fun and sunny and we got lots of vitamin D.”

Healthy Choices

Substance Misuse

The children have learned all about how harmful certain substances can be and how to make decisions to stay healthy. They know about the harmful effects that alcohol and nicotine can have on the body.

“We learned the cause and effect of alcohol and other substances.” Kyle said.

“There are good drugs and bad drugs but that depends on how they’re used.” Holly  commented. She was talking about how some drugs are good as medicine if they are prescribed by the GP and taken correctly.

Power off and Learning Outside

Success – A Fantastic Outdoor Learning Day

The day just flew by as the children spent a healthy day outdoors working with nature and learning about the environment.

Learning to be Creative with Nature

First the children visited Nature’s Rest to gather natural materials. Look at the wonderful job they made of creating their own boxes of nature.

Team work

P6 and P5/6 worked as a team to get the hoop around our obstacle course. They worked well together and rose to the challenge completing it in under 6 minutes!

Improved Fitness

Building on their achievements from Sports Relief the children opted to do 10 laps of the pitch. Well done everyone!

Mud Art

P6 thoroughly enjoyed creating masterpieces using mud and natural materials. I’m sure you’ll agree their work is very imaginative.

Elise shared, “I loved the mud art. We got really creative and some people had great ideas!”

“I felt it was fun and exciting. I enjoyed mud art and learned about different leaves,” Sophie noted.

Exploring Nature

Some of the children would like to work with animals and in wildlife when they grow up and really enjoyed finding things out for themselves using magnifying glasses.

Aaron commented, “Ienjoyed learning about animals because I want to be a vet.”

“I enjoyed looking for insects and using magnifying glasses to really look at them, ” Abbi enthused.

We had a tired, relaxed and happy group of children at the end of the day. Good job everyone!

Art- analysing, creating and reflecting

P6 Astounding Art

Over the last three weeks the children have spent time analysing their own eyes so that they could draw them and add lots of detail to make them distinctive. Firstly they sketched using pencil then progressed onto charcoal drawings where there was a marked improvement. Soon they will  be finsihing off collages of the eye using colour and rafia.

Molly shared, “When we were drawing the eyes we saw the differences between everyone’s eyes in the class. It was helpful to use pencil then charcoal to make it bolder and to add shading.”

Samuel thought, “I was surprised at all fo the different details I could see in my eyes.”

“I think I got better when I looked at my own eye I noticed shapes I hadn’t seen before,” Louise added.

Fun Learning in P6

Art

We did observational drawings of fruit bowls with Fair Trade fruit and our art-partner’s eyes. We paid particular attention to shape and shade especially when we used charcoal.

Maths

We’ve been learning to add and subtract 4 digit numbers and commented;

“I feel more coinfident in Maths because my scores are improving in the Maths assessment.” Holly B

“I feel I’ve gotten more confident ad  better in my Maths.” Kori

IDL

We’ve been planning Powerpoints and are simplifying the information we will use to describe influential Scots.

World Book Day and Book Fair Week

P6 are budding authors

After the visit from Stuart Reid the children had lots of creative ideas for writing for this special Book Fair week. They are competing against each other to win a prize and to tell their stories to P1 on Friday. They have all begun to write a short story where they have chosen the genre and are describing the plot and characters. Good luck everyone.

Creative Writing and Winners

Author’s Visit

This week we had a visit from Stuart Reid who told us about his series of books and ran a workshop for us on how to be a creative writer.

Influential People

Zari learned about successful people and the differences they made e.g  Alexander Flemming who made penicillin which was used in WWII and has helped fight bacterial infections. Elise, Keri, Daniel and Alyssa think that David Livingstone is a worthy person to learn about becuase he helped abolish slave trade, discovered Victoria Falls and fought a lion.

Burn’s Competition Winners

P6 worked hard last month learning with a Scottish theme and entered the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Burn’s Association competition. We’re very proud of our three winners below who won first place for art and writing and a bronze for writing. Great job! We’ll done to all who were entered.

P6 Artistic  Wall Display

Elise, Amara and many of the children are proud to have their Chinese lanterns and dragons displayed in the gym hall. The display is 3D and very colourful.
