S1 – Burns Work

S1 will this week be working on our legendary Burns Unit.  To mark last week’s Burns day and the birth of our national poet S1 will be learning about the poet, his work and how we celebrate him in the 21st Century.  This unit has been adapted by Mrs Burton to suit online learning with a wide range of research and videos tasks which will be highly beneficial to students as they develop their research skills.   All assignments should be submitted to teachers using the assignments tab on MS Teams.

Burns Day

Today is Burns Day, the day we celebrate the work of the National Bard, 262 years after his birth.  Unfortunately we cannot celebrate the way we normally would however we have asked students in S1-2 to undertake a short research task today just to mark the day.  We wish everyone has a lovely day and hopefully we will be able to celebrate again next year.  Burns’ famous words from “To a Mouse” have never seemed so apt. “The best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley”.  Stay safe everyone !

Mrs Burton’s N5 English Class

This week we will be starting Act 2 of the play “Sailmaker.”  During the double period we will listen to the play while following it on the PDF.  Any student who cannot join the Live Lesson will find the links in Files on MS Teams to allow them to listen to Act 2 and also to follow on the text.

S2 English

S2 classes will be embarking on writing their final newspaper report based upon the events of the poem “The Ballad of Billy Rose” which they studied last term.  Students will find a copy of the poem in Files.  For the last two weeks students have worked on the skills of newspaper writing this final task will allow them to showcase the skills they have developed.  The task should take a some time as students ensure they have all of the information required and their report is written in the style of a broadsheet newspaper.

Mrs Burton’s Higher Class

This is class will start the week with a Live Lesson to read and discuss Chapter 9 of “A Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”  This is an important chapter for the overall plot so it is important students have a sound knowledge of these events.  For the rest of the week students will build their notes on chapter 9 using the materials provided by Mrs Burton.  There are live tutorials when pupils are timetabled to be in class which allow students to ask for help or to discuss ideas.

Live Lessons and Tutorials

As a faculty we are delighted to be able to provide a number of live lessons and tutorials this week, all of which are detailed in the Live Learning Schedule on the school website.  Students are encouraged to engage with these opportunities if they can.

Mrs Jackson will be offering a tutorial for Higher Spanish students on Wednesday (20th) at 10:50am to allow students an opportunity to practise their speaking.   Students are strongly encouraged to avail themselves of this opportunity.

Mrs Burton’s Higher Class

There was a live lesson this morning for this group where together we read and discussed chapters 7 & 8 of “Jekyll and Hyde.”  Students will spend the rest of the week developing their notes on these chapters with Mrs Burton providing a  tutorial on Thursday, during the double period, to allow students to ask questions and seek clarification on anything which is puzzling them.

S2 English

S2 are working on a Newspaper writing project which explores the job of a journalist and allows students to develop their knowledge of language while also getting the chance to develop their writing skills.  Students are encouraged to work on their individual class notebook on MS Teams as it keeps their work together and allows class teachers to provide instance feedback.

eSgoil Tutorials

There will be an eSgoil tutorial for Higher English on Thursday 14th January at 10am.  This tutorial will cover the Reading exam which is traditionally the paper candidates find most difficult.

There will be a similar event for N5 students on the same day at 2pm.

We would encourage ALL students at N5 and Higher to take part in these events on Thursday if they can. Details can be found on the school’s Twitter account.
